Northwest Airlines Corp. plans to emerge from bankruptcy as an independent carrier and stay that way through 2007, Chief Executive Doug Steenland said on Tuesday.

Northwest is due to file details of its reorganization plan by Feb. 15. "That business plan and that valuation will be predicated on Northwest being a standalone, independent airline," he said.

This is no surprise at all.

The rumors concerning a DL/NW merger always said any such action -- if taken -- would not happen until both carriers had emerged from BK as independent carriers.

And remember - this was just a rumor.

There have been no actual talks or negotiations of any kind.

And the dialog I bet went something like this
DL: "Good thing we don't have to go through with anything yet eh?"
NW: "No doubt."
DL: "Tomorrow US will have to withdraw its proposal and we can all be independent carriers."
NW: "You betcha. Hey...Wanna come over for hotdish after ya come out of Bankruptcy then?"
DL: "Sounds good. How maybe mid-summer."
NW: "Good timing. We have Aquatennial ya know."

IMHO, if I was employed with NW....I would trust the CEO's comments about as much as I do the President of the USA.

While the NWA CEO has been ruthless in his restructuring cutbacks, I don't believe he has lied. Please give a few examples where you think he has. You must have a few to be able to make your statement.

These are exactly the things CEO's say right before they announce a merger!  Smile
