Sensations MD-80 In Turbulence

On a recent CO Mileage Run ATL-ANC (see my TR), I found myself on one of AS's few remaining MD-80's SEA-ANC. While most of the flight was smooth, we had to descend through some very turbulent air on the way into ANC.

It was the kind of ride that makes even this (somewhat) frequent, and usually calm, flier get a little antsy, gripping the armrest and all.

But I must say this aircraft felt like it was rocketing forward - like on the takeoff roll - but I know that can't have been the case since we were on our way down through a cloud layer. I've been through such rough patches on other birds, but haven't felt this sensation. I heard the engines throttling up and down, and there didn't seem to be a connection between this and the sensation of acceleration.

I noticed a similar thing a couple months ago on a climb out of ATL on a DL MD-80.

Has anyone else noticed this about the MD-80. Does anybody know what I'm really feeling? Or am I just totally crazy?

..I think its the latter... Wink

Being though, I fly on MadDogs every few weeks (certainly a couple of times a month..it must be 3-4 years where I haven't boarded a MadDog every month) and they handle wind turbulence, etc. nicely...a couple of years ago, from PHL-ORD , the wing of one MadDog I was sitting on was hit by lighting...pretty cool..it was just a "pinkish" hue everywhere..unfortunately, I didn't get my camera out in time.. Sad

Welcome to Anchorage... we're known for rough air. Especially over the cook inlet areas right before arrival or immediately after departure... departing the ANC area is also typically unpleasant.

The MD-80... well, I haven't ever noticed anything unusual.
