Any Chance Of VS Doing SYD-LAX-LHR?

I wonder why doesn't Virgin Atlantic apply to fly to London via the US? It's offers a premium product that can compete with QF and beats UA hands down. This might be a way for SQ to access this route.

Just a thought.

For one it is a longer flight via LAX than it is via HKG, VS probably doesn't have the aircraft now either.

What would be the point of VS starting RTW service with a SYD-LAX-LHR flight anyway? Didn't they even have some kind of difficulties with the Australian authorities to even get the rights to fly to SYD in the first place?

If, then they could codeshare with NZ, which is the only one with RTW service since they started AKL-HKG-LHR or they could wait until DJ starts going longhaul and codeshare with them on SYD-LAX.

DJ have committed to doing Australia to North America and my suspicion is that is will do SYD/LAX more than SYD/SFO...why?

Virgin America will fly LAX/SFO meaning passengers can connect to the Virgin America network. VS fly LAX/LHR so there is another connection to Europe that way. Even though VS,DJ and Virgin America are seperate companies that operate independently of each other,they do share some services.

You can claim and earn Velocity points on VS out of Australia. There has also been gossip that DJ will even use either SQ planes or VS planes and a DJ flight number on the Australia to North America route until they get their own planes.Rumour has it that Godfrey and Branson think it will be 'screw you' to QF and the Australian government. If anyone loves sending 'screw you' messages it Branson - just look at the billboards at SYD when Macquarie Bank bought it and effectively tried to shut DJ out while giving QF more gates!

I believe UK carriers have the fifth freedom rights to use the USA as a stop enroute to Australia.

Apples and Oranges here. I've long held the view that a combined DJ/VS SYD-LAX-LHR would work and I'd have thought that if Sir Richard wanted it the Australian Government would actually let him. Between DJ & VS they could figure out a leasing method for the aircraft to ensure it met all the applicable treaty laws around the place. It would also give DJ quicker access to long haul aircraft and, more importantly, the experience of Atlantic in executing their long haul operations.

Boeing and Airbus have left production slots open for DJ while they figure out which aircraft they want, they don't really need SQ or VS to do it I believe, from what I hear and am told, that DJ want SQ involved....not sure of the reason, if this gossip is even true....

The Australian Goverment says SQ has no case to fly SYD-LAX which is true in the sense that SQ would have to route an aircraft SIN-SYD-LAX which is not a direct route and also no one would fly SIN-SYD-LAX even though SQ are after SYD-LAX traffic.

VS however could use LAX but the route is somewhat longer than via Asia, they would have to apply like AC but would have a good case.

I'm pretty sure it was HKG that was the problem, maybe SYD to a lessor extent.

Well all know how the Australian government love to protect QF from competition, especially when Geoff goes crying like a baby about 'unfair' competition, and recently this has been really showen with how they have railroaded plans from two of some of the worlds best carriers, SQ and AC. The Aussie Government have blocked SQs plans and the government are taking way to long to approve ACs YYZ-LAX-SYD plans with B772s. VS operating SYD-LAX, sadly you can keep dreaming. If NZ come back onto the SYD-LAX market, then the government can't stop NZ with their better product, but this won't happen.

So so true.....whilst Geoff Dixon and the Australian Government say how fond they are of competition, it is only when it suits Qantas ie. they are trying to get into another market, then they cry foul. Dixon ties anything to do with competition to Qantas to jobs and how jobs will go if anyone dares to insist they have a right to fly SYD/LAX. Hitler Howard and his bumbling transport minister buy it every time. After SQ got rejected for the third time they actually stood up to the Australian Government and slapped some restricitons on Australian companies trading in Singapore and oh did the Australian Government have a hissy fit. Rightly so Singapore pointed out that SQ is facing restricitions in Australia....... AC will have a tough time getting permission to fly the route and Geoff Dixon will be right in there being his usual scaremongering crybaby self!

I wish NZ would start flying the route again - much better product in my opinion. There is nothing worse than buying a fare on Qantas from SYD/LAX knowing you will get QF attitude the whole way. Qantas -The Spirit Of Australia...?

The UK ALREADY has the rights to fly Oz-USA and has had since 1954! All VS would have to do is be "designated" by the UK government to use those rights. AFAIK they haven't even asked!

Rights would have to be obtained from the Americans as well. I seriously doubt that they would give SQ 7th freedom rights in this market. (The current US-Singapore ASA gives 7ths only for cargo.)
