Is it hard for the air traffic controllers to handle such a funny flight track, in terms of keeping traffic separated, etc? Does it add a lot to their workload?

Looking at the FlightAware log, one can see that the GV spent the 1st hour at 40k ft, and after that went from 45k ft to 49k ft, finally taking 30min to descend.
There isn't much traffic (except other corporate jets) that high up, so I imagine it wasn't a problem.

No, not really. You should see around Seattle when Boeing tests all their aircraft west of the Cascade Mountains...now that can get fun to watch.

You might be surprised how many corp. jets can now fly at those altitudes. There's not as much traffic at those levels as 280-390 but there is quite a bit up there now.

Its always nice driving by Appleton and seeing some green planes sitting outside the hangars. I have toured Gulfstreams facilities and have many connections there...it just an awesome place at ATW.
A/C worked - SF340 E145 CRJ CR7 CR9 DC93/4/5 B738 B752 B753 B763 A333 - Not bad for working at a small regional airport.

It's things like this that sets Gulfstream apart from the rest of the world. Creative thinking is the key to success. It'd be interesting to know what they did for 8hrs.
