Skybus Service And Destinations

With skybus now already having recieved some of their aircraft (i believe), when are they going to start their service?? Heck, they havent even announced their destinations as yet...
what is taking them so long and where do you think their first destinations will be??

They haven't announced their start date or destinations yet because, as far as I know, they have not acheived certification from the FAA. If they ever do, then we might see a firm start date and route map. One can somewhat take a guess as top possible destinations on tap for Skybus. They have said they want to fly to destinations currently unserved from Columbus, so as to avoid direct competition as well as take advantange of the airports new service incentive program. In keeping with the Ryanair/easyJet model, they also want to fly into tertiary airports so as to avoid high landing fees and congestion.

According to the CRAA, these are the 10 largest markets currently without nonstop service from Columbus:

1. San Diego
2. Seattle
3. San Francisco
4. Kansas City (service starts 5/1 on Midwest Connect)
5. Jacksonville
6. West Palm Beach
7. San Antonio
8. Portland, OR
9. Austin
10. Sacramento

So one might assume that Skybus is potentially considering serving those destinations in one way or another (i.e. I doubt they'd go to SFO, but they might fly into SJC).

Large O&D cities with airports capable of handling scheduled passenger service with limited or no commercial service might also be of consideration:

Houston thru Ellington
Tampa thru St. Petersburg
Phoenix thru Mesa
St. Louis thru MidAmerica
Boston thru Portsmouth

Keep in mind though, those cities, as well as most other high O&D destinations are already well served from Columbus to their primary or secondary airports. In addition, the majority of the cities without nonstop service from CMH require long stage lengths and do not have readily available secondary or tertiary airports (i.e. San Diego and Seattle), so service would be counter-intuitive to the Ryanair/easyJet model. For those reasons and countless others, I doubt Skybus will be around for very long.

Portsmouth would be a good MHT/PWM alternative, not a good BOS one though, as its 90 minutes north of BOS. ORH would be better, as it lacks any Air carrier service, and that its 45 minutes from BOS.

why would you have any doubts that they would get clearance??
They are "US citizens" after all.......

I think that part of COex leaving was because they would have had to pay for needed upgrades to the small facility they operated.

Yes Hanscom is set up for commercial traffic. I think it is a much more viable alternative to BOS than ORH. ORH is a PITA to get to from the highway; it's all side roads and traffic prone. Plus BED is closer to the city than ORH.

When Shuttle America was doing all of it's own flying BED was its biggest station serving BUF, LGA and Trenton, NJ. I remember using BED for flights to/from BUF at the time and I thought it was great. Truly "Hassle-Free Hanscom".

But A. What happened to all the construction going on in the B gates where Skybus was making their "Holding Area", I work out at the airport, but i haven't seen any construction out there as of late.

You are both Correct, I did the Dataset analysis too, and it seems that Seattle, San Diego and SFO would be the 3 major airports. However i see a problem with this.

See, If Skybus is following the Ryanair Model, then that is based off of Short Haul, High Density, and Cheap fares. They might be Cheap Fares, and High Density, however Neither of these three airports are Short Haul at all, so it would be fairly difficult for them.

I see Skybus, starting service, to secondary or tertiary airports in Cities where service exists. For Example, Gary Indiana...Not too far from Chicago, or Islip, FRG, or even White Plains for NYC area. The other possibility is Airports in FL that don't have service. PBI for example.

My initial thought was if Skybus started service just before OSU had their Spring Break, Service to Pensacola, or Panama City would have been an incredible way for them to start service. Good Customer base (College students and cheap tickets... Smile), and Full flights, what more could you ask for.

I hope things work out for Skybus, I know a couple people who already left their jobs for the Company...and i hope the airline brings lots of revenue and traffic to the Columbus Area.

The majority US ownership requirement is not what concerns me. They might have trouble meeting the other fitness requirments mandated by the DOT, however.

The problem with GYY, or even RFD, is that Skybus wouldn't qualify for any start-up grants from the airport, and they would face immense competition from the incumberant carriers operating from Chicagoland's prefered airports. It could very well happen though, since GYY and RFD fit the model they're emulating, in that they are short stage-length trips to uncongested, tertiary airports in a huge O&D market. I just have a hard time imagining they'll be able to fill a 150-seat jet from CMH to GYY, despite significantly reduced fares.

Because SFO doesn't fit their business model. I have heard that Skybus officials have been visiting airports such as EFD in an effort to re-establish security and other services at these airports in order to serve them. EFD has all the requirments necessary to operate scheduled commercial flights, they just need to be reactivated.

Hit the nail on the head. With an initial fleet of two aircraft, begining a route such as CMH-SCK on the get-go would be suicide, as they'd essentially be dedicating one airplane to that one route. However, most of the short haul destinations worth a damn to fly from CMH are already well served in the first place. PBI is possibly the only destination not served directly from CMH with the right combination of O&D, stage length, and price elasticity to work for Skybus. However when the geriatric ward comes a-callin' to fly to West Palm, they are going to have a heck of a time boarding all those wheelchairs without jetways.
