Question About Freedom (F8)

I once flew on F8 in 2003 TUS-PHX on a CR9 as a non-rev. They were like YV partnered with HP at the time. Now my question is: Now that F8 isnt in PHX anymore, are they still around or did they go defunct and gave their aircraft to YV? I remember reading about this aircraft 'giveaway' on A.net somewhere, did a search and I cannot find it.

Thanks.

Freedom is a subsidiary of Mesa Air Group. They currently operate the ERJ-145 and Dash-8 for Delta Connection, mainly out of ATL, MCO and JFK.

I take it that they are still around, sans the CR9 and west coast ops? I swear that it was a CR9 on F8 between TUS-PHX in 2003 the one and only time I was on them.

Freedom started with the -900s as a non-union subsidiary of Mesa. The pilots of Mesa (rightfully) objected to that and Freedom became union and the -900s went back to Mesa, from the way I recall it happening.

Would you consider it as a 'defunct' carrier since they are no longer doing west coast ops? Seems like they changed their whole ops 100%.

No - I would only consider them a defunct carrier if Mesa shut them down and discontinued using the operating certificate.

Would you call Shuttle America a defunct carrier? They changed their operations 100% as well when they became a subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings.

I thought it would be because they are no longer doing west coast routes anymore like they used to, if you know what I mean. Thats why I asked.

A move that has Orenstein written all over it...  sarcastic

I understand what you're saying - but defunct isn't the appropriate word. That would imply the carrier is no longer operating. I'm trying to think of one that is, though...I'll let you know if I find one!!

oh yes...freedom, that was a fun time at mesa, they managed to piss about everyone in U.S. commercial aviation off...and yes, they certainly did have the -900s. I can't remember, were the -700s initially freedom out of PHX? I don't think so, I think they were YV...
