BA's New 747s (interiors)

I just flew LHR-LAX on BA, and the 747 had the new Club World (business class) seats, which look very nice, and the AVOD systems in World Traveler (economy) seats. I am wondering how many planes have been fitted with these new systems/seats so far?

By the way, my experience with the AVOD system in economy was horrible!. All the text on the screen is in white font with a light colored background, rendering it impossible to read. Further, there is no way to adjust the brightness or contrast on the screen. Also, all the films in their selection are at least 3-4 years old, and it looks unlikely that they will change this selection.

I'm a little puzzled by the film choice you say you had. Last time I looked there was a good blend of old and new.
I haven't really paid much attention to the interface but next time I'm near an AVOD equiped aircraft I'll have a look.
The Film, TV and music selection is updated once a month so should offer quite good variety for frequent travellers.

As for the number of planes it is a definite 4 with another due this week.
They are. G-BNLN, G-BNLK, G-CIVS, G-CIVX and G-BYGA is due this week.

That seems strange - BA's website shows 8 out of the 11 movies on offer this month were released in 2006. Also surprised to hear that it's AVOD - thought that was only going to be added to First and Club World, leaving WT and WT+ with old-school IFE??

The existing IFE on the 744s and many of the 777s only needs a software update at the seat to make it AVOD. Media servers replace the old tape players, along with a few other modifications at the 'head end'.

This work takes a bit of time which is why it is done at the same time as the Club World upgrade.

That is for the old systems. There are at least 20-25 movies in the new system, and BA's website does not have a page for the information on the new system.

Will the SEA-LHR flight( BA0048 & 49) have the AVOD in economy? I will be flying on Mar 8th, and was wondering whether it will have AVOD by then ?  Smile

No. The 747 fleet is being converted first, then the Heathrow-based 777 fleet, starting May 2007, then the LGW 777 fleet.

The 767 longhaul fleet is NOT being converted to the new Club World seats, but the majority of these aircraft already have the new AVOD product.

Hey, at least it's not like NWA who used to have the same movies outbound and inbound across both the Atlantic and Pacific. One month I did round trips to Europe and Asia from the U.S. and all there was were the same four or five films on all four legs.

I just flew the flight on the 7th of February. Those were not the movies. There were films like Armageddon, Hunting for Red October, Pretty Women and more I can't remember. All old films.

Kaitak, perhaps the AVOD failed on your flight?

In the event of AVOD mucking up, a regular non-AVOD system kicks in with 18 movies until the AVOD can be fixed on the ground.

Above is the february AVOD programme.

Actually Kaitak it looks like you may have selected the 'Greatest Worldwide Box office Hits' option that I noted in my original post (10 films) and missed the 'latest releases' option.

'Greatest Worldwide Box office hits' is a subsection of the movies option designed as 'all time favourites'.

The movies on the 'Greatest Worldwide Box office hits' are:
- Armageddon (1998)
- Harry potter and the philosophers stone (2001)
- Lord of the rings (2003)
- Pretty Woman (1990)
- Spider Man 2 (2004)
- The day after tomorrow (2004)
- The sixth sense (1999)
- Toy Story 2 (1999)
- Troy (2004)
- Twister (1996)

To be honest I have never used the AVOD system, I have worked on the AVOD embodied aircraft but unfortunately we are not allowed to sit and watch the films hehe.

If you think the layout of the menu screen is poor, or the subsection titles mis-leading you should contact BA. They'd love any customer feedback since the system is quite new.

No, well, I could access the music and tv channels, so I don't think it failed. And the format as I said earlier was completely different than that of the previous systems. (I have flown BA's old 747s and 777)

Nice to hear that BA 747s are getting an upgrade. I'm taking my first-ever BA, 747, and intercontinental flight at the end of March from YVR to LHR... hopefully these suckers will be installed on my flight. Between WestJet's live TV and AC's On Demand programming on the E-Jets and XM-updated aircraft, i've gotten fairly used to video on demand... i'd hate not to have it for a 9+ hour flight.

Hahahaha......yeah, that was once true...but now NW has AVOD in all classes on TATL/some TPAC flts, and is (as hearing from this thread) a lot better than BA....which is quite sad....c'mon BA...I know you can do better! I fly NW A330s about once a month, and there's allways about 30-40 movies, new and old, to chose from..... plus a few games and TV shows.

If you read BAStew's post above you will see that BA has a wide selection of movies in various categories also.

G-BYGA arrived at LHR from CWL (where BA heavy maintenance takes place), so I assume that it is now part of the club too!  Wink

you can.... the seat map for the ones currently converted is exactly the same as the old ones: the a/c with 70 Club seats remain at 70 seats with the same footprint. The seats are a bit more cleverly constructed, so have a touc more room, but footprint is identical. The other half of the 744 fleet has 38 Club seats and these will change to 52 seats, as the jig things round - moving Prem econ to Zone B and Club to Zone C.
