Looking over some of the new a/c coming out, I wonder if a flight that is 10,000 miles in length is a good idea. I dont doubt that the a/c like the 777 could make it, my question is should they? Sure airlines like SIA would love to get rid of the stop in Hong Kong or Taipei on the way to LAX, but 16 hours in a plane? I love to fly, but even I would have to think twice about that flight.
Also, what about the non-smoking rules? As a smoker I would avoid this flight big time. I would hate to see air rage with a smoker that hasnt smoked in 16 hours.
Other than the new 777 and the 744x, does Airbus have a plane that will fly 10,000 miles? I see that sometimes CX goes non-stop HKG-Toronto with a 340 but not always.

Well, if you think about it, if you have to stop, you easily add another 2-3hrs of ground time, and maybe 2-3hrs of air time, due to the fact that the stop will most likely be somewhat out of the way. So, 16hrs nonstop or 20-22hrs with a stop? Bear in mind that a stop can also mean a delay, a cancellation, interruption in sleep, extra frustration, etc
I think these very long ranged aircraft are a good idea.

I think it would get kinda crampy in coach but still it's probably better than stopping over somewhere.
Also, currently nobody is flying more than 10,000 miles.
JFK-HKG will just be a little more than 8,000 miles great circle.

The thing that concerns me is that are people ready to be cooped up on a plane for nearly 2/3 of a day so they can fly routes like EWR-HKG or YYZ-HKG non-stop.
It wouldn't be so bad in First and Business Class with their decent legroom and deep-reclining seats, but this will not be a good idea in Economy Class unless they have they "More Room in Coach" pitch of around 34-36 inches AA is now using.

The A340 can't go 10,250 unless it was completly empty. I think with even a light load its range is under 10,000 miles. Check http://www.airbus.com then head to the A340-500 performance. I think with about 80 tons it could go about 9280 miles.
