It should be noted that JL never considered buying the 747SP for the (then) TYO-JFK route because they felt the plane compromised too much pax/cargo capacity to get the longer range.
What JL did was to modify a number of 742's so it can support increased gross weights for much larger fuel capacity (but sacrificing some cargo space). I know that the current JFK-NRT speed record was done on a JL 742 at around 11 hours 50 minutes.
