Was listening to ch. 9 on a recent UA flight and the tower authorized a "tip-toe" approach into SFO. Does anyone know what this means? I did a search and couldn't find a thread on this topic.

The "tip toe" is the name given to a charted visual approach to 28L at SFO. There is a "Quiet Bridge" appoach to 28R and the FMS Bridge Visual to 28R also. Tip Toe is just the name much like the River Visual to DCA or the Stadium Visual to LGA.

Here's the actual chart for the approach, if you want to see it.

I believe those two approaches received their names because they were designed for noise abatement, correct?

I do not know, but it makes sense to me.
