I was @ LAX earlier today and I happened to notice parked behind the KLM 744 and in front of the Hawaiian DC-10, in terminal 2, that there was what looked to be a DC-10 (although it could have been an MD-11) with the sole word World on it with a small black design on the tail. Until today I had never heard of this airline. What are they doing @ LAX? Are they a charter airline? Please filll me in with some info! Thanks,

they are a charter and cargo airline. there is an MD-11 carcass chillin in buenos aires after it suffored a hard landing en-route to uraguay. i know they fly lots of Md-11s and have the most boring livery ever!

World Airways is a true "oldie" in charter and cargo business. They started in mid 50's with L1049's and DC-6's too and their major business was to fly for US Armed Forces all over the world. They also flew charters and flights with pilgrims to Jeddah during the ramadan. During their evolution they latter bought B. 727-100's and B. 707's too some of them direct orders from Boeing. After these they bought DC-8-63's, B. 747's and DC-10-30's and I do know that at least during the 80's they had regular flights ( schedule ) to London Gatwick, after these I know they dropped that and stayed in the charter business and leasing aircrafts to other airlines wet or dry lease specially when they received the MD11's. I noted already World Airways planes leased to: EL AL, GARUDA, MALAYSIAN, AER LINGUS etc.
So even it was your first time seeing them they're quite old!

Just to add to CV990, the scheduled portion of World began in 1979 using DC-10's. They operated from Oakland, California to Kansas City, Honolulu, BWI, LAX, and Newark as well as from Kansas City to Oakland, BWI, LAX, and Miami, and from BWI to Boston, and Frankfurt with a stop in London. In 1987 they moved their corporate offices to Washington Dulles and scrapped the scheduled routes. They seemed to disappear fro several years after that. I believe mainly because their aircraft sported the schemes of Malaysian and a few cargo carriers. Around 1990, they made a bigger comeback using a new, but plain, paint scheme. They started scheduled service again in 1992 from JFK to Ireland, Tel Aviv, Damascus, and a city on the west coast of Africa whose name escapes me now. this did not last long and the company reverted to charters fro tour companies and cargo work as well as the Hadj flights.
