Last night I saw an Evergreen International 747 with S47 written on it's tail. Is there a reason why this particular 747 has S47 written on it's tail, instead of the Evergreen logo ?

Well the Evergreen Super Tanker has "947" written on is, could you be mistaking the 9 for an S?

Well it was night time so I could have mistake the 9 for a S, but why is a tanker doing regular military cargo service.

I think I read somewhere that this aircraft is mostly used as a freighter, I don´t know if it has ever served as fire tanker apart from demo-flights last year.

The B747 and Dc10 Supertankers are having a hard time getting commitments from the USFS and CDF for full season contracts, due mostly to the large price tags (around $7mil a year) to have the Supertankers on Contract. The DC 10 tanker saw limited "on Call" action in 2006, so the future of these machines in a fire fighting role is still up in the air.

I love the smell of jet fuel in the morning.

They are using them as freighters for the moment. As AT502B said, they do cost a lot. Now if the prices were down, it would be a different story.

the aircraft IS a freighter in its spare time. And the dept of defense probly contracted evergreen to do some hauling.

It would be nice if the FAA would let them use it to put out fires.  irked
