According to Mexicana Frecuenta (ffp homepage), Mexicana and Cathay will join together to fly to Hong Kong, Beijing, Bangkok and more starting March 1st. It seems that the codeshare through LAX finally made it.
Now MX codeshares with:
Oneworld: IB, AA, CX, LA, QF
Star Alliance: SQ, LO, OZ, LH, NZ
Other: VW, QA

I hope they fly less frequently to L.A. with bigger planes, I hate the actual scheme, like 10 flights daily with A320´s, when maybe 3 or 4 with a nice 767... and the diference is huge when you deplane on a 747 and then get on a 320 for another 3 hours...

The thing is that MX currently offers the following nonstops from Los Angeles: Cancún, Guadalajara, León, Los Cabos, Mazatlán, Mexico City, Morelia, Zacatecas and starting March 1st, Culiacán and Monterrey and with their LCC they fly to Torreón. The reason you see that many 320s is because they have a lot of destinations out of LAX. It is also important to notice that they have around 5 nonstops to MEX, but business traveleres also like to have schedule options. Sad to mention that MX only has 2 767 which they use to EZE only - we all wish they could have some more...but we'll have to wait for that.
Also MX is among the largest international carriers in LAX.

Mexicana is practically a non-official member of One world. I wonder why they haven't apply to join???

Their flights do very well, specially all the flights between 10 pm-5 am. Passengers like frequencies and variety on their destinations. If they ever get the A321, that airplane would be perfect, anything bigger and cutting flights I think would be a bad idea.

I believe that the reason they pulled out* / arranged to get kicked out* of Star was because they didn't find the benefits sufficient to counter the costs of full membership ... maybe once bitten ? they seem to be getting a lot of benefit from their bilateral arrangements with other airlines and may see no need to take it to another level . It is nearly 3 years since they left Star and apparently they had some constraint against joining another alliance within 2 years , but that was up on 1 April last year so maybe they are not going to join ever .

I wonder if MX will be a part of oneworld? Based upon my readings of oneworld, in which they want to limit the size to 12 carriers, would MX really be a good fit? As I've said before, I think you'll see an Indian carrier and African carrier fill the last two spots of oneworld. Perhaps, MX could be an associate member?

Quoting Orbis (Reply 3): Imagine deplaning on a SQ 747 from FRA (SQ25), wait 6 hrs at JFK and then get on a cramped A318.
Well, I beg to disagree a bit. For flights less than 5 hours long, a narrowbody is not that bad. And even though it is really cool to fly in a big widebody like a 747, an A346 or a 773, boarding and deplaning are long and potentially nightmarish processes... and don't get me started on waiting for your luggage. On the other hand, if you fly on board an A32X, then you can be sure that boarding, deplaning and claiming your bag will be rather quick. Besides, the fact that a plane has two aisles does not mean your seat will be more comfortable if you are in coach... in business maybe and in first definitely, but since most people fly coach, they don't care too much.
Next flights: MEX-JFK-MEX AM 788 | MEX-JFK-FCO AM 788/AZ A332 | AMS-MEX 74M

I am not complaining about a single flight mex-lax, thats simple even in the worst seat because 3.5 hours its not that much, but imagine a guy on a 744 seated for 11 hours then 3 more on LAx then get in a A320 for another 3.5...OUCH...
Id love MX to get a bigger more "classy ride", I remember the countless times I took the Dc-10-15 out of LAX...
Well we can only hope....
BTW N405MX thanks for the First class seats!!!! YOU ARE THE MAN!
On the home page there is a banner that has the announcement, if you click it, it doesn't give you any info...all I wrote came right of what it says there. It says in a big countdown how many days, hours are left for the tie up.

Personally, I don't find connecting onto a smaller airplane much of a problem, the the airplane is at least a midsize jet. The seats are pretty much the same in terms of comfort and not likely to get more comfortable on a bigger jet of the same airline. Just that more people would be stuck on the widebody. I think MX high frequency to LAX and the numerous Mexican destinations is a great thing.
That aside, it is good to see MX with all these partners. Next stop One World Alliance. Way to go Mexicana.

I once flew MXB on the LAX-MEX run. Back then, it was a standard scheduled flight, and the LF was pretty high... I would say at least 3/4's of it. I've always thought flagship service MX 900 would do very well on a widebody.

As much as I would like to see MX in an alliance again, the reality shows to different scenarios. One makes us think MX´s is really close to OW because of the codeshare agreement. But the other show us that MX management is not interested in improving the quality standards demanded by OW (or any other alliance for that matter) to its members.
On airways magazine (october 2006 if I am not mistaken) there is this great trip report of a RTW with OW. It depicts greatly and at the end qualifies all flights and airlines flown, from the long houl SCL-SYD to the short hop LHR-CDG. I sadly and really do not see where MX ( in its current conditions) could fit in OW.
I must add that on the same magazine,a few years ago the same writer did the trip report of a RTW in that ocasion with Star Alliance, when MX was still part of it. Things have changed a lot ever since for MX and not for the best.
I guess my point is clear.
