Sounds like they are inspired by Ryanair, charge for everything and sell as much stuff as you can onboard. The concept works if the crew sees it as something positive instead of a nuisance, so Spirit management must sell this concept to the employees first, then I'm sure it will be a success.

In the end the less services you want the less you pay for ..Called user pays why should every passenger pay for services they dont use ..If its cheaper than i dont see a problem with it..

It is just a smoke screen to raise fares. The fare is not going to go down the amount that they will charge for each service.
I think it will also attract a lower class traveler and will drive the higher yield traffic away to other carriers.

You know i bet thats the argument the Europeans said when these carriers started operating now look at them .. I have a feeling its just the beginning in the USA !!!!
Yes quite often it does lead to higher profits in the end unless the passenger only uses the very basic services.. The more you use the more you pay !!! In New Zealand on the flights between NZ and Australia the LCC carriers are often not much cheaper than the full service carriers but by the time you pay for the extras ie entertainment food wine etc the LCC earns more $$ out of the passenger than the full service carrier .. What amazes me is the customer only remembers the original price of the fare and forgets the extras that made it dearer than the carriers which inc it all for free in the fare...

A lot of European economies are "socialist" in nature, where everyone pays more for the common good of all things and people. Along comes these LCC's that offer you a choice which you do not have in everyday life, the ability to pick and choose what you want, and do not want, could this be another reason however small that this type of service is popular in Europe?
Just a thought, not intended in anyway to be a flame post.

BTW I heard from a friend that got the memo from the company that Spirit Plus seats will remain on the aircraft! they will be a premium seat, no cabin devider and no no comps to them though. We cant even comp employees, any comp is considered stealing

From what I was told (and I'm not saying it's true) the FAA wouldn't allow us to up the A319's to 150 seats because something about not enough emergency exit space in the exit rows or something like that, therefore plus seats will remain and the 319's will stay at 144 seats.

EasyJet solved this by adding another over wing emergency exit on each side. Now they can have their 156 seat A319's. (yuck.) I'm glad to hear that Spirit is keeping their current configuration at least.

I wonder why? Skybus plans 150 seats in their A319 fleet. It's gotta have something to do with the config of the overwing exits. It'll be interesting to see the difference when we all see the first Skybus A319.

I agree. If this is the new business model at Spirit, I'm even less likely to fly them. DTW is my primary airport, but I avoid NW like the plauge. I have elite FF status on both US and FL. US is very aggressive about trash pickup on final approach. FL seems to be able to keep cabins clean with only 25 min turns as well.
I thought the business model at Spirit was good. The rapid expansion into caribbean markets was a good idea IMO. They carved out a niche nobody else in the LCC airlines tried. But P2P might have been a better idea, instead of feeding everyone thru FLL. There is a lot of untapped potential here in DTW that NK hasn't looked into. DTW really doesn't have a lot of good caribbean service. NW likes to add seasonal service, but the market has to be big enough for better service.
When it comes to flying on an LCC, I gotta say that the B6 or FL model has more appeal to me. I haven't actually flown B6, but hope they come to my area soon. Even the WN model is more attractive to me than being nickled and dimed on Spirit. Part of the reason why this former NW Gold Elite is a former gold elite is the nickle and diming that NW has gotten into. Especially since in my case (frequently last minute), NW is usually more expensive than most carriers.
That being said, I hope it works for Spirit. when I have flown them, I have found them to be a good airline.

I thought SpiritPlus was great! Maybe it was that most people didn't know you could upgrade at check-in for $35, which is a lot cheaper than buying a SpiritPlus ticket on their website. To me, its well worth!
My mother did SJU-FLL last saturday (Feb10th), we did the upgrade (after buying a $8 ticket, plus $23.50 taxes) and she said she felt lonely in front. She was the only one seating in SpiritPlus! How could that be possible?!!!

I can tell ya from my point of view on this. The traveling public is not going to like this. I have about 80 people all ready upset about not being able to take 2 bags at no charge on the flights. And these are all families. This one check bag for free and charging for the others is CRAP and we all know it. You folks at Spirit need to get that old USAirways idoit out that office and get someone in their that cares about your carrier or you will not have one to fly for long. These 5, 8, 9 cent seat sales are are are, well I have to keep it clean on hear, but you get my meaning. As a travel agent and owner I can tell you booking seats on NK is next to impossible to get and they are not availble when you do happen to land on the right date for this fare. Everytime they change a flight time they delate all the seat assignments. No body else does that. Oh well I guess they are trying to be like RyanAir and charge for everything including the use of the bath room.
Sorry but that is my take on this whole thing Spirit is doing...... Oh ya Contract talks will be alot of fun. All Travel agents hang on because the union is going to be fighting a long time with the Corp. office on some of these issues. Good luck to all Spirit Airlines employees. Your going to need it come August 7, 2007 when your contract expires.

I can't believe they put that many seats on an A319 as is. Independence put 132 in all coach configuration, which I felt was exactly the right amount of legroom...but an additional two rows of seats as is on Spirit has gotta be painful on a longer trip.

How are those 30-35 minute turns going? I know they were started pretty recently and I know from experience at other airlines, turning an A319 in 40 minutes was an uphill battle, particularly in the hub, even though totally doable.
We've been able to do it, as I said earlier though, you have to pass on such things as cleaning. The only time we seem to have a problem is if there is a crew change, you can't rush the new crew thru their checks, it's just not fair to them. I've made no secret that I am not a fan of 30 minute turns, but we've been able to pull them off in my city (a smaller city). The only other problem I see is once there is a delay of any sort, there is really no chance to make up time anywhere.
You feel better now that you got that off your chest!! I can understand pax (especially cruise pax and families) getting upset, however, if you pay $.09 for a fare and complain about $10 for a bag, there is something defenitely wrong. As far as seat assignments, I agree with you, I do see a lot of seat assignments drop out. I would love to see us actually go to a open seating format, with the exception of Spirit Plus of course. Trust me, DTWAGENT, I know your frustration with these changes, unfortunately they are here to stay, and if pax don't like them , they do have other options for carriers....

I think the only way I could fly Spirit woudl be with this "new" Spirit. I have jumped around SE Asias on Air Asia & Tiger Airways paying almost nothing and it is just fine flying with them (execpt for the delays). I have also flown on Ryanair and other low fare carriers in Europe. I try to always fly on DL or Skyteam and pay a little more if the difference is not much. With extremely cheap tickets I could jump around on NK as well.
I never ever check bags, dont mind open seating or no frills or FF miles if the airfare is as low as the ones the have been promoting lately. I fly for fun every month, so with those fares I could even fly every weekend!
