Boeing says that Air New Zealand has exercised the 4 787 options into firm order. They'll be 787-9.

NZ now has total of 8 787-9 on order, first delivery set for 2011

I'm just curious: does anyone know why NZ is ordering B787s in small numbers (I think it was 2 first, then 4, now another 4). Are they firming up options as funding is becoming available?

Thanks,

Tony

Today seems to be the day for 8's. 8 for LO, now 8 for NZ.
Congrats to all parties.

462 firm orders (I think) and counting now for the 787.....and first assembly this summer!! WOW !!

Seems weird for Boeing to wait for 6 weeks to make announcement publicly

I think the difference now is that the deal has been signed on the dotted line - in December NZ just announced their intention prior to all the documentation actually being signed ..... and sorry I didn't mean to rain on your parade

Congrats to Boeing and ANZ- I was wondering when this intention was going to be made firm!!!! Hopefully with that out of the way we can await the 773ER order with bated breath. Any insiders can give a timeframe to expect a decision??

Not that I am an insider but was noted in a previous thread a route announcement is expected Friday - YVR and was noted in a local paper financials are due Tuesday Feb 27.

With tongue in cheek, firmly, perhaps NZ will launch the 787-10 . Would'nt that be a put down for Tim Clark et al.

Which airline(s) do you think will order the 38 planes required to reach the magic 500? Seems the US airlines have not made any noise about placing an order and don't seem likely to any time soon. BA? But who would order in such quantities?

Even leaving some of the big airlines aside, TK might order up to 20 frames by then. That wouldn't be that much of a surprise.

Well, SQ could firm up their 20 options and BA could order 20, that would do it.

also , our revered fount of knowledge , NZ1 , mentioned on another thread a couple of days ago that the 767s should all be gone within the next 3 years , as this is before EIS for the 787-9s maybe there is a leasing deal to be announced for some 787-8s to cover the withdrawal of the 767s ???

Time for a new viewing deck at AKL!
25 PM : Four more 787s with RR for NZ, one more with RR for LOT and an RR 787BBJ. A good week for RR! (But where's the QANTAS announcement...?)
26 Tom12 : Whoa, congrats to Boeing. Can see it reaching 500 now ... Tom
27 HighFlyer9790 : great news for the 787 program....it is gonna be a big success!
28 Aerojoe : When is NZs much awaited fleet announcement on 77W likely to occur and when would likely delivery occur? Also, has NZ reduced the quantity and diversi
29 XT6Wagon : Its very possible that the slots for these 4 planes came up as "next" and so they firmed the options instead of losing the slots to a firm order.
30 N328KF : And why not? If you can't use them, lease or sell them...SQ and FR do.
31 ZKSUJ : Norris also said the NZ were interested in the 748. It's Fyfe to my knowlege that will bring in the 77W in place of the 744s
32 SunriseValley : I subscribe to the view that they might take on some 787-8's . Fyfe indicated this about a year ago. Look closely at which leasing company is holding
33 Cchan : I gotta agree with Fyfe or whoever decided on 77W over 748s. I doesn't make sense to buy 748s for NZ when it comes to the time they need to get rid o
34 ZKNBX : My speculation to. There will be a lease if the decision has been made not to proceed with the proposed IFE upgrade to the 763 and to phase them out
35 SunriseValley : What ILFC orders are there that don't have a name on them?
36 Aerojoe : I assumed that these 7 aircraft would be the DJ order announced earlier this week - am I wrong?
37 SunriseValley : Perhaps, all the reports have DJ and Boeing negotiating. If DJ has a deal with GECAS what would there be for DJ to negotiate with Boeing?
38 Post contains images ZKSUJ : I do agree with you to a certain extend and whilst i don't have the figures with me, by the tim NZ is saying it will retire the 744s, My popinion is
