By 1980 only a few users of VCP had chosen to codeshare with Brazilian carriers and bring their Sao Paulo bound passengers into Congonhas (CGH). VCP still had healthy traffic and the apron would be busy early morning and early evening with European carriers.

By January 1985, a month prior to the opening of Sao Paulo GRU, the roster of airlines flying passengers out of VCP was reduced to ten (AF, AZ, BR, IB, KL, LA, LH, PL, PZ, SR). Movements had been reduced to from 61 to 31 per week. The opening of GRU further reduced service at VCP. By May 1985 only Alitalia, KLM, Lan Chile, Lufthansa and Swissair were left. VCP was an intermediate stop in some of those European carriers flights between Rio and Argentina/Chile/Uruguay. Lan Chile was operating 707s on SCL-MVD-VCP-GIG. This set of five carriers served VCP for several years. In the meantime, service grew at GRU with airlines that moved upon it opening and airlines that had given up serving Sao Paulo with their own aircraft, such as PanAm and TAP.

Lan Chile was the first to go. Two weekly flights were routed SCL-MVD-VCP-GIG. Lan Chile tagged part of its USA operation to the flight to attract US-Brazil traffic through SCL. Then it extended the flight from GIG to MAD.At the beginning of 1986 it deleted the MVD stop and its 707 flights served SCL-VCP-GIG-MAD twice a week. It added a weekly 737 frequency SCL-VCP-GIG by mid 86 and a stop in REC on the southbound MAD service in mid 87. It moved to GRU on May 1988.

Alitalia moved to GRU in May 98, then moved back to VCP for the Winter 89 season only, and had its last scheduled passenger service out of VCP on Feb 28, 1989. It only started nonstops between Sao Paulo GRU and Italy in May 1993.

Lufthansa had been offering the most generous schedule out of VCP with four weekly frequencies that stopped there on the way to EZE, MVD and SCL - and then back. In June 1989 it started codesharing with a Brazilian carrier in the GRU-GIG segment. On July 01 the last scheduled LH passenger service out of VCP left for SCL as LH518 and passenger operations moved to GRU. Nonstops between FRA and GRU started on January 1990.

By 1990 the only European carriers left at VCP were KLM and Swissair. VASP served the airport with a single daily domestic flight to GIG and that was it for its passenger servies.

KLM also dabbled with GRU prior to leaving VCP permanently at the end of October 1990. Its last weekly flight into VCP still did the complete routing AMS-GIG-VCP-EZE-SCL. In the following year it started Sao Paulo GRU to Amsterdam nonstop service.

Swissair switched one of its three weekly flights from VCP to GRU as soon as GRU opened. It operated at both airports for about two years, with the Sunday night departure out of ZRH routed GIG-GRU-EZE-SCL while the other other two did GIG-VCP-EZE. Then it moved the whole operation back to VCP, closed the SCL leg and over winter 88 it upgraded the service to 747-300. It downgraded it back to DC-10 at the end of the season. It soon reopened GRU with northbound flights doing EZE-GRU-GIG-GVA-ZRH, while southbounds stopping at VCP instead of GRU during the summer 88 season. From October 88 on, Swissair was back to serving VCP only. In August 91 service was upgraded to MD-11.

On March 27, 1992, the last passenger longhaul service operated by a foreign carrier, SR 149 left VCP to Zurich with a stop in Rio. A couple of days later Swissair headed to GRU permanently.

In June 1991, Varig's then commuter carrier, Rio Sul, started serving Viracopos to Rio SDU. Over the next couple of years VASP added more domestic service to the airport and TAM got started in 1993.

International flights were back to Viracopos briefly between December 2004 and May 2005 when Varig attempted to provide daily nonstop service to EZE with 737s and same flight number service to the US via GIG. Today the airport is growing strong in domestic traffic, heading to 1 million pax traffic this year or next, and those carriers flying passengers to Europe and beyond are a faint reminder.

Note: I gathered info from several sources, and yes, I cannot vouch for 100% correctness since so many dates are mentioned. Corrections welcome.
