Samaná El Catey International Airport apparently recently opened in the Dominican Republic.

Does anyone have any pictures of the airport or a plan of what the terminal looks like?

Gracias!

I saw it under construction years ago and I saw somwhere that they are geting several german charters now.
The resort where I stayed at only catered to germans. The food, tours, activities, etc.
But I know that many italians go to the north part of the Samana, so wouldn't be surprised to see Italian charters too.

I wonder how long is going to take for DL to start flying there  Smile

This site has not been updated, but you get the idea:

According to this local paper, the charters are coming from CDG, MXP, MAD, FRA, DUS, YYZ, YUL, YOW, YVR.

"La terminal inició sus operaciones en noviembre del año pasado con el arribo de vuelos de las aerolíneas LTU y Cóndor. Actualmente opera 18 vuelos internacionales semanales, procedentes de ciudades de Europa como Milán, París, Madrid, Frankfurt y Dusseldorf, así como de la ciudades canadienses de Toronto, Montreal, Otawa y Vancouver"

Congratulations Dominican Republic ! Another airport to fill the islands most beautiful beaches and destroy the island. Now I suggest an airpot at Cabarete, between SDQ and LRM, south of LRM, west of SDQ and West of POP. I am sure they will find some more places !

That happens when there's little investment in road-infraestructure and governments preffer builing airports.
As for that new airport, I'm sure AA Eagle, DL maybe CO will be flying there. Not sure about Latinamerican airlines, but LA likes to fly to leisure destinations in the Dominican Republic.

Some Venezuelan airlines like Aeropostal fly scheduled to SDQ and POP (STI and LRM are announced) as well as charter to PUJ. Aserca operates scheduled to SDQ and Charter to PUJ. Laser makes charter to PUJ. So they might come to Samana as well.
But I guess most of the European airlines will serve the airport as well.

You are right and I totally agree. The street network in the Dominican Rep. is a shame.

Have you seen the beaches around La Romana now and in the 90s ? 50% of the palm trees away ! I guess this will now happen to Samana as well. A shame ! It used to be a paradise. Difficult to reach but secluded. Well, I will have to find another place on earth now.

First Choice will have fortnightly flights from both LGW and MAN to Samana this summer

Any Spanish airline has confirmed charter or scheduled flights to Samana?

Maybe the new 332 or 343 of Air Comet?

They fly to Punta Cana, once a week, SCL-PUJ-MIA. LAN Argentina flies EZE-PUJ-MIA, also once a week. That's it.

Air Comet has already charter flights to El Catey Samana, currently a stopover for some of the Madrid-Montego Bay flights. These are operated with their A310-300 (and it will remain so).

Look for a 738 from ATL real soon!  Smile Or DL could get real adventurous and try one of the former TWA 752s from SLC since it is an hour closer than Hawaii! LOL!  biggrin

The D.R. is a long way from being the ecological doormat its Hispaniola neighbor to the west is. See the pic in Al Gore's book and you'll see what I mean. Haiti is the dump (or dare I say $hit-hole!) of the region!  smile  Tourism is clearly the economic engine, something the D.R. is excelling at and has done very well at over the last couple of decades. During the November-May season getting many Canadians and Europeans coming over by the charter plane full and spending 2-3 weeks at a stint is what puts foreign currency in their system  dollarsign   dollarsign  !

My Canadian friends who've been there tell me it is far worse than many border towns in Mexico. Keep in mind the D.R. was right on the heels of Haiti and Ecuador for being the poorest country in the western hemisphere for many years.

It seams that PUJ and POP get most of the resort traffic compared to LRM and SDQ.

isnt Cabarete west of POP?

anyway I agree, its a shame such a small island has so many airports.... in other touristic countrys its normal to drive upto 3 hours to a resort from the airport.... in 3 hours you can reach every point in the DR using POP, PUJ or SDQ...

the airlines, must be makin a hell of money, the prices for vacations there in the DR from Venezuela are very very expensive..... Chiguire, any infos if the flights are full?

Supposedly it has the most pristine beach being situated between PUJ and SDQ. Cindy (from Canada) informs me that POP is the cheapest from all the big Canadian tour operators (Signature, SunQuest, Transat Vacations etc...), but it also has the topography that is more like the big island (Hawaii), similar to KOA. The north coast has seen the greatest amount of growth in recent years, especially as more western Canadians have turned to the D.R. from Hawaii due to the currency difference, Denise (my fiancee also from Canada) so informs me.

It's actually east of POP not quite half way along the coast in the northeastern part of the country between POP and PUJ on the south coast of the Samana peninsula overlooking the "Bay De Samana" at about 19.2 degrees north latitude and 69.3 longitude west.

Samana is also getting a new highway to Santo Domingo and the north coast.
The trip from Santo Domingo is now about 4 hours, but will be 90 minutes after the highway is completed.

I considered Samana to be the best region in the island to visit. You get amazing beaches, national parks (los haitises) and even whales!!.. but the secret is out now

Aside from Santo Domingo's harbor, Samana has the best logistical possibilities for cruise ships. If they build the dock facilities, they have a much better chance to attract them for ports of call compared to Puerto Plata since ships will not have to navigate through the shallow waters of the Bahama Banks that dominate the territory between the north coast of the D.R. and Miami or Port Everglades in South Florida where they originate.
