Hi, I was driving by the airport in Traverse City this mourning and I counted 8 NW/NW Airlink planes parked at the terminal. this was around 10 am or so. I thought something was weird when I was leaving the local Walmart a little earlier and an NW Airbus flew overhead and I know they aren't flying Airbus's into TVC right now. Just curious why we had a little NWA hub here this mourning.:P

These arrivals do look a bit odd. I would guess these are charters for some sort of event. TVC in winter seems like an odd place for an event.

Yeah, the southern half of the lower pennisula got socked in with ice fog this morning. It warmed up to near 40F yesterday and melted a lot of snow, saturating the air with moisture. Then it got cold over night, down to about 15F, below the dew point and an icy fog developed this morning around sunrise at 7:30am and burned off by about 10:30am-11am. It was enough to completely screw up the 8am inbound arrivals bank into DTW. A number of aircraft were already on approach into DTW before they had to be waved off and divert
The same thing happened at many of the normal DTW diversion airports. FNT got a few in, along with MBS before it got bad. TOL sent and American Eagle diversion to PIT. DTW had to resort to other alternates such as TVC, PLN, APN that were far enough north to not be fogged in.
PLN took two Mesaba diversions - (including the PLN-DTW flight that had to turn back after it made it downstate)
MES3089 SF34 Pellston Regional Airport Of Emmet Co (KPLN) 06:14a EST 08:36a EST (departed and had to return)
MES2745 SF34 Ithaca Tompkins Regional (KITH) 06:38a EST 09:26a EST
APN too a Mesaba flight
MES3044 SF34 Charlottesville Albemarle (KCHO) 06:02a GMT 08:59a EST
MBS took one diversion before it got socked in:
MES3185 SF34 Yeager (KCRW) Wed 06:39AM EST Wed 08:52AM EST
FNT took a few diversions also:

Yes, that is a long time to be in the air, almost 3 hrs on a Saab. It must have been lightly loaded today in order for it to stay airbourne that long. We had a Saab fly SCE (UNV)-MSP a few times as a sports charter for the University of MN, but it was less than 50% full for the women's soccer team.
Interesting decisions today in APN. The morning flight CIU-APN-DTW left APN and diverted to MBS
MES2706 MKG-DTW also diverted to APN this morning, leaving the MKG & CHO Saabs on the ground at APN.
They cancelled MES3044 in APN and took the pax off this flight on combined them on the Saab from MKG and then sent them on to DTW.
The aircraft that came in from CHO stayed in APN until this afternoon where it flew up to CIU to operate the afternoon CIU-APN-DTW flight. They cancelled the outbound DTW-APN flight this afternoon, and let the Saab up in APN cover the remaining legs.
Good operational decisions being made today to operate as much of a schedule as possible.

Judging from the fog that's already formed down here in TOL tonight, looks like there may be similar problems on Thursday morning.....

Tomorrow morning shouldn't be as bad since there is a cold front going through this evening. It started getting foggy but the winds are supposed to kick up the front should kick this moist, warm air out of here.

Quoting Flyf15 (Reply 16): Check this one out! Man, this guy sure did divert to a far away alternate!
From looking at the track, I suspect CLE was his alternate, but couldn't get in.

The weather bulletin here in TOL expires at 0300, hopefully things will be clear in the AM.

Looks like they were thinking about diverting to MBS too, but couldn't get in there so they went on to GRB.
Most of the mainline guys still made it into DTW. I think the EWR flight was the only one to divert.
They were landing on the 3's/4's during yesterday's fog.

Story w/ video. I think its great that NW offered meal vouchers and discounted travel on a future flight for all involved. Sounds as if one knob didnt think that was enough. "Its my first time flying Northwest and it will be my last". HA.

There are always those idiots....as if anyone else isn't prone to weather delays/diversions. I guess they thought it was okay to land with zero visibility.....
Anyways, here is the full diversion list from Wednesday morning
The other short hops (17) (FNT, LAN, GRR, AZO, TVC, TOL, MSN, ORD, MKE, IND, FWA, SBN, CVG, CMH, CLE, CAK, PIT) were held before they took off.
Of that entire arrival bank, only 3 flights got in befor the airport closed: BWI, IAD, and LAX. As you can see why DTW was such a mess on Wednesday with aircraft diverted all over the Great Lakes. Once the airport reopened they had to bring all those flights in, regroup and attempt to pick up the schedule for the rest of the day. It was quite a mess, as the fog rolled in at the worst possible time.
Its pretty rare that places like TVC, PLN, & APN are used as DTW alternates, but they had to fly far enough north to where it was colder and not fogged in.

..."my travel agent said get off the line(phone) and get in line quick..???
That guy needs a new T.A. The drill is if you bought the tick from a T.A, call the T.A.(if open) and
they will rebook, call you back on the cell and give you your new sched. THEN get in line and the one agent..
(heh heh heh) will have your new record in the computer.
safe
