Other than career goals such as getting promotions and more preferable routes, do commercial pilots have personal goals, such as making their flights better each time. I hear they review a type of flight data recorder periodically--how would a pilot express his or her long-term personal goals?

Yes, in my case, I'm always trying to fly the perfect flight. I haven't done it yet and some flights have been very good or even excellent, but I'm always trying to be perfect. My spectrum of what's included to reach that goal is very broad and probably too long to try to list here.
In my opinion, flying is still as much art as science and experience plays a role in each. So part of the challenge (to reach perfection) is the proper level and application of each.
