Are A321 And 757 Close Competitors?

Since A321 is a drivative of A320, so I think A321 would be a close competitor t 737s just like A319 and A320. However, I found that A321 has pretty the same pax capacity as 757, so I just wonder whether they are close competitors. Any help? ^_^

though the pax capacity of the 321 is quite similar to the 752, in my opinion they are not really competitors. The 757 has a range advantage to the A321, it can be operated very efficiently over short and medium haul routes whereas the A321 is most efficient on short routes. (a close comparision can be done with the A300 and the 767).

Besides, most airlines who opt for the 752 take into consideration the cockpit similarity with the 76X same goes with the A320 Family.

321 & 757 are not really close competitors. The 757 is a bigger, more powerful and longer range plane. The 321 fits rather close in the middle between a 320 and a 757.
But you are right when identifying that the 321 is a considerably more potent plane than the 320. while for instance the difference between competing 737-800 and new 737-900 is much smaller.

the 757 has more much more range than the A321, but in terms of passenger capacity, they`re pretty similiar.
SAS considered the 752 and 321 for their european routes, and landed on the 321..
Boeing`s official answer to the 321 is the 739, even if it`s a bit smaller..

Well you can say that the A321 is more suited to shorter routes and less weight and the 757 to longer routes because of its range.
But all in all the the 321 and the 757 are very close competitors.

You have to remember that the routes in Europe are better suited for the A321--higher-capacity, but shorter range. That's why the plane is well-suited for flying routes like FRA-MAD on LH.

The A321 is not so well-suited for operations in the USA, since cross-country flights can take over five hours to complete. That's why I have concerns that US Airways can fly the A321 between LAX and PHL year-round; that route is better-suited for US' current fleet of 757-200's. US' A321 fleet would be better suited for operations east of the Rockies, for example PIT/PHL-MIA.
