A3XX Rumor

To all: It was reported on Bloomberg this morning that Airbus is working on a cheaper alternative to A3XX. I believe the report came from Germany. Supposedly, the new plane is a stretched A340 version that would seat far more than a 747. If true, this would represent an interesting turn of events for A3XX, especially since it hasn't even been launched officially.

Thoughts and comments?

Wouldn't be surprised. The A3XX is a white elephant. Very few airports will be capable of accomodating it and it is basically a huge pipe dream and an arrogant one at that. Airlines and passengers want flexible schedules and not
one flight per day in some of the world's busiest markets.

Airbus is better off improving and stretching the A340 series the same way
that Boeing will do with the 747.

I don't buy it. The A3XX will fly. I don't think either Airbus or Boeing has the balls to turn down SIA. Besides, is it even possible to stretch the 346 any further? Sounds nuts to me.

Just one question: does nobody ask about the source of this report? Well it was german magazine "Stern". You don't know "Stern"? Oh, they also published Hitler's diary some years back, which turned out ot be a false document from the first letter to the last. And there were many, many more reports like this.

That's all I have to say.

How could the A340-600 possibly be stretched farther? Does this proposal mean adding an upper deck to the A340 design...?

THIS IS A JOKE!!!!

Stern reports, that Airbus is planning to stretch the existing A340 by 11 metres. The new aircraft, named A340-600 would then be capable of transporting about 500 pax.

I won't quote more. Just add 11 metres to the A340-300 and you get.... EXACTLY! The A340-600!!!

Congratulations dear "Stern" magazine. You discovered a truly secret: Airbus is planning the A340-600. I wonder, if there could also be a market for a shortened version, called A340-500.

Oh, and BTW, I would see a market for a single aisle twin. Let's call it A320.

What a joke, these "Stern" reporters!!!

Well done Wingmans. 10 out of ten for accuracy.

If this came from Bloomberg then something is in it, but again the A3XX will fly with or without this "cheap" alternative.

If it was a stretched A340-600, wouldn't the back tail section fall off

Normally there is no smoke without a fire.
If there is the slightest background behind those Stern rumors, then it may very well be an attempt from Airbus to minimise the shock when in a few weeks time they tell us that the A3XX program has been cancelled (or postponed - once more).
Over the last six months they haven't collected the orders which they hoped for. They have obviously talked in detail with all relevant airlines and learned a lot about their ideas about the future.
Sure the A3XX could / can / will be a great airliner. What makes it different from the rest is size. If the world wanted substantial numbers of a 1200 pax plane with 8 engines, then Airbus (and Boeing too) would just build it immediately. But success in production business is connected to production of products which the customers want. No CEO likes new high risks products and relatively small chances of profit. Especially not when his company is busy showelling money into its money tank on producing existing products, especially the 320 family.
There is a size limit above which there is no demand from the airlines. If Airbus finds that the A3XX is above that limit, then it won't be produced.
Maybe on the 1st of December Airbus will rename the A3XX launch into a "failed market test". They often said "50 fixed orders by November". There is a long way to go. Not so much in time as in number of orders.
But one thing about the Stern rumor: An 11 m stretch on the 340-600, that's crap. It would (like the 747X) also demand a new wing and new landing gear etc. The 340-600 is the upper limit of what the 330/340 wing can fit on.
And one more thing about Stern: They can only partially be blamed for the Hitler diary incident. They were just not clever enough to avoid being fooled by a smart guy who wrote it and collected a fortune for it. It is hardly relevant to compare that to the A3XX rumors.
Best regards, Preben Norholm

I just read in the "Handelsblatt", a German daily business newspaper, that Airbus denied the A 340-600 is going to be kind of a "replacement" for the A 3XX. On Tuesday, Airbus reacted to "Stern" article and told that this is not the fact.
