TUIFly today has announced a new base at Memmingen / Allgäu Airport (FMM), a former military airbase in Southern Germany that currently is without any commercial traffic and undergoes conversion.
TUIFly will base a Boeing 737-300 at the airport and open seven new routes:
- Berlin: 12x/w.
- Hamburg: 6x/w.
- Venice: 3x/w.
- Palma: 2x/w.
- Naples: 2x/w.
- Antalya: 1x/w.
- Heraklion: 1x/w.
First flight June 28, 2007. TUIfly expects 100.000 pax for 2007, half of them inbound. 2nd aircraft to be based for winter 2007/2007.
Tickets go on sale on Feb 27, 6 o'clock. Guaranteed 19.99 EUR tickets for bookings until March 4 for travel between June 28 and July 25.
I would not rule out addition of a CGN route on Feb 27 as there is a press conference at CGN on that day that will focus on TUIFly's strategy at its CGN base.
Nearest airport to FMM is Friedrichshafen, 88km to the west by road (Intersky base). Stuttgart is 140km to the north (HLX and Germanwings base), Munich is 115km to the east, Innsbruck 175km to the southeast.
The airport is close to one of Germany's favourite winter tourism areas. The area is also popular during summer, with the Alps and Lake Constance nearby. Strategy obviously is to benefit from year-round demand. The base will be a blow to local carrier Intersky at nearby FDH which serves Hamburg, Berlin and Naples with DHC8-300 equipment.

last fall, HLX was poised to introduce daily service from MUC to LBC this summer. however, plans to do so were withdrawn due to a lack of subsidies and funding by regional authorities in Schleswig-Holstein.
I hope that the new services from Memmingen will not lead to those plans being put on the hold indefinitely, as I believe it is still in the cards to start in summer '08.
