Airliners With Folding Wing Tips

We all know about the folding wing option on the 777. It was designed to cater for airlines that might use the aircraft at smaller gates, that potentially could not accomodate the full wing span. It did however have a bad impact on the aircrafts weight. What Im wondering is, have any other airliners ever been offered with a folding wing option? Did Boeing look at the possibility of making the wing extensions on the 747-8I foldable, in case it had compatabiliy problems at some gates designed for 747-400s?

I can't speak to the B748, but I am quite certain that no one has purchased the 777 variant. There are no 777's in commecial service that use the folding wings.

In a word - no. Folding tips are not even a consideration on the 747-8i.

When the 777 was conceived Boeing worried that because of its wingspan airlines wouldn't buy it because it wouldn't fit their existing gates, and so they designed the folding wings. The airlines apparantly decided it was cheaper to revise their gates than pay the weight penalty for the folding wings, and nobody purchased them. I'm pretty sure that Boeing won't go down that road again unless the situation changes drastically. I do not believe that anyone else ever offered it.

The DC10 and L1011 both have wingspans that are much smaller than the 777, and those were two of the planes that airlines were looking to replace with the 777. The MD-11 also has a smaller wingspan.

But the weight penalty was too severe, and nobody ordered it.
