Hey, just found this of the Finnair Plus News website:
"Should you plan to travel in the summer, you will have ample opportunities to fly from Toronto to Helsinki on our three-times-weekly non-stop flights, starting in June 2001. This connection will also serve destinations in Scandinavia, the Baltic countries and Russia."
I'm assuming that Finnair will probably operate the route with a 757-200 like they did this past summer (although with a higher frequency)
Hopefully they can start up the San Francisco route again as well?

Yes, you are correct. AY will have flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays operated by one of the five B757 that AY has. The route will be flown from the 10th or 12th of June to the last of August. This will be a so called "leisure flight", which means it´s a charter. No business class. You will however be able to get tickets only on these flights (you don´t have to go trough a travel agency and buy a package tour). Sales will start next week.
As previously mentioned, AY already has a code-share to YYZ with oneworld partner BA via LON.

How common is it for airlines to have this kind of scheduled charter flights? You don't normally see other flag carriers flying charters to places like the Canaries... except Finnair. I know some major airlines own charter-only companies whose costs are kept to a minimum and aircraft are clearly distinguished from those of the parent company. But Finnair offers these charter destinations as their own, the flights are coded as AY, and you even get Finnair FF miles on them!
Charters can't exactly be a goldmine for the company, but rather a source of steady, moderate income. Sure they don't want to let go of that. Wouldn't it be temptating, however, to differentiate charter ops to a different company with a lower cost structure and this way make more profit?
I´m not sure if they will be repainted along with the rest of the fleet. I previously stated that only B757s are used for leisure flights (at least I think I did). That´s not really true. Sometimes the MD11´s are used as well, and sometimes even in an economy-only version.
Since AY, as every other company, is very concious of things that cost, I´m sure that AY is making a nice little profit with the current structure. And it does give AY that little "ticket only" sale possibility.

Yeah, I know the 757s look a bit like the "intermediate" livery now seen in the ATRs (any A319s/321s in that livery anymore?) Now, the MD-11, OH-LGD, has been in an all-economy configuration for quite some time already.
...Which leads us to the fact that before they converted -LGD into all-cattle config, the aircraft must've had a business class, along with the rest of the MD-11 fleet. Who, then, of the holiday-goers, got to sit there? I know I didn't, back two years ago, when I went HEL-LPA-HEL on two(!) different MD-11s. Dumb of me not to check the thing out then...
It also so happens that they use some MD-83s for charter ops as well. I won't recommend them to anyone: at least in a 757 or MD-11 you have some entertainment. In the -83, there is just the next-to-none legroom. And charter flights tend to be longer than scheduled...
Why I mentioned the possibility of the company wanting to hive off leisure flights, is because the trend seems to be towards trying to fill up planes with as many business pax as possible - and still complain about low yields. So how can holiday routes be all that profitable...
