Old ONT Terminal Shots In "Zodiac"

Dear Gang,

Did a search and didn't find anything on this topic.

I just saw the movie "Zodiac" this afternoon. For those who haven't seen it, it covers the Zodiac serial killer of the San Francisco Bay area, and cartoonist/ author Robert Graysmith's (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) 20-year research to try to help solve the crime. Decent but not great movie. I don't think I'll give any spoilers by noting the following.

At one point in the film, a police detective interviews a Zodiac attack survivor who is a staffer of some sort--appears to be a ramper--at ONT. They introduce the scene, which takes place in 1991, with a closeup aerial shot of ONT's old terminal. They did use the actual old ONT terminal, and they also film a shot in its actual old ticket lobby.

But...the "1991" aerial has a real howler. Alongside two WN 737's in the correct paint scheme of the time (the mustard color adopted in the early 80's) the producers show three United a/c (I think 2 727's and a 737) in early-70's blue-star livery. D'oh! The UA a/c are at the right gates, around 6-7, but they show the WN a/c around 8-9, which I think is wrong; all shots of ONT I've seen from the 90's show WN around 13-14.

They got the clothes and cars mostly right for the various 70's and 80's scenes in the film, but they just get partial credit for the portrayal of ONT.

Better than most movies, I'd say... I'm surprised they didn't just show the current terminals and a few Canyon Blue 73Gs with winglets, like I daresay most movies would... If they even got the correct airport.

Either way, good to hear they at least did a LITTLE research...  Smile

Exactly. A large number of the (insert airport here) shots you see in movies are done at ONT because of its proximity to Los Angeles and the good condition of the old terminals. This way they also don't interfere with regular airport operations. If you look closely in some movies that use ONT, you will notice a lot of UPS tails, mainly because the UPS hub is located near the old terminals.

Cool! And the site says they have their own 727-200. I'll also note there's a scene in Zodiac where they have a 727 painted correctly in late 70's PSA livery (at least the part of the plane that's showing--no. 2 engine with the letters PSA is showing but the tail isn't). But the interior shots are in a five-across plane; don't know if they just left a wider aisle for filming or it's a DC-9 or MD-80.

San747--that's correct, it's good to see they did some research. I'll agree they deserve more credit than I initially gave them. Of course, if they'd come here, or consulted http://oldterminals.topcities.com/ontario.html, they could have gotten the CGI planes in the aerial shot perfect.  Smile
