Maestro Ends Its Operations

A new airline, based in Quebec City (YQB), announced today it will end its operations. They operated a 757-200, leased from Skyservice, to southern destinations and intended to start service to Nice, Paris and Brussels this summer.

They blame an over capacity and a price war caused by Air Transat.

Well that lasted long. WOW knew the flight loads were bad but didn't think they were that bad. sorry to hear this, hope the Quebec city folk find some decent work  Sad

Well flew on one of the last flights today for maestro. as the last one will be done on the 12th of this month. Not sure where it is going, but who knows I just may end up on it. The 757 looks pretty good, first time I have laid eyes on it. with two different tail colours and wavy stripes along each side. Green and blue. Hopefully this will stick around for a bit cause it is certainly better than plain white. hope someone grabs a photo of her soon, was in Toronto this morning, not sure when will be back here. C-GMYH is the REG.

Maestro was the tour operator Skyservice did the flying for in YQB. Maestro was not the airline. They wanted to open up an airline, but used Skyservice for their air lift. Aircraft and Crew were both that of Skyservice.

Wonder what MYH will be used for now that Maestro is gone? Stand-by aircraft when it's not doing Eastern Europe?

the name Maestro has been taken off the plane. all that remains are the lines along the fuselage, and the maestro tail. Looks really good, and I don't think they will have time to actually get the decals taken off. going to be busy the next few days getting the passengers back from down south. As for us now having a spare plane around this summer. as original plans were only to have 1 330, 2 757's TDV was to be doing the European Program. when it wasn't doing the southern and Portugal turns. Well hopefully some extra flying will pop out of somewhere.

I had heard that MYH was going to come to YYZ to do Eastern Europe when not doing YQB flying. I think TDV is going to be a little busy doing Portugal 2 X per week plus the turns down south to be doing anything else.

Guess we will find out soon enough.

According to the article, they flew for 79 days and had 12000 clients. I could not check their schedule because it isnt available on their website anymore, but I assume they had at least 1 return trip per day. If you do the maths, that means 151 passengers per flight on a 210 seater, or roughly a 72% load factor.

In the worst case, they had 10 weekly flights, which means a 50-55% load factor.

I think they should have used a smaller aircraft to start with. A 737 or a A32X would have been better, just like the wet leased Canjet 737 Air Transat based in YQB to "kill" Maestro before they got too big.

It was more than that. Here was the weekly schedule.

2x FLL
2x HOG
1x CCC
1x SNU
2x VRA
1x ACA
1x AZS/LRM
1x PTY/ADZ
1x FDF/PTP
1x PMV

Nonetheless, that makes it a total of 13 weekly departures, so an average of 2 return flights a day. Load factors were on average less than 50%,

Bingo !!! The B752 was the wrong aircraft for a new startup like Maestro, especially with TS firmly settled in at YQB, with weekly flights to CUN, CCC, HOG, POP, PUJ, VRA and SNU with the A310.

It didnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that over-capacity was to be expected.

If Maestro had started out with 3 or 4 initial destinations and used a C6 735, they'd be doing great. Those 50% 757 load factors would have been above 90% on a 735 and the prices for packages and on air only sales would have been high enough to at least break-even. Look at how Sunwing entered YQB this winter, starting conservatively. No doubt they'll be back next winter.

Oh man I hope they don't remove the stripes, that color scheme is great, especially the green left side. Haven't seen it in person yet!

All the few nice Canadian airline colors left are disappearing.

Last flight was to FLL I think on monday night.
