Fly Asian Xpress To Order 15 Planes

Down from the original 20 and launch has been postponed due to the lack of aircraft.

"AirAsia X, the new airline, will pick Boeing's 777-200 or the A330-300 aircraft by Airbus, Fly Asian Xpress shareholder Tony Fernandes said today. The new carrier has also decided to postpone the start of its services by as long as a year because it can't get the aircraft it needs to operate in July, he said."

And they have already picked the plane but won't tell...... I wonder why.

"The company is close to an agreement for the 15 planes and has already picked the model, Fernandes said, declining to say which aircraft was chosen."

Well, which one is it and why won't he tell us?

Boeing's 777-200 or the A330-300

We assume he means 777-200ER. Interesting as earlier reports somewhat improbably pitted the A330-300 against the 777-300ER.

In case it falls through. If he has to go back to his 'second choice' he'd rather not have that made public knowledge.

A source has revealed that AK will make the official announcement of the fleet for AirAsia X in a week or two time.

Expect a 10+10 or 10+5 order of Airbus 330-200.

Yes, it's A332s, not A333s, B772s or B773s as speculated before.

End of the story.

So this thread is about Air Asia X, the long-distance LCC rather than the Fly Asian Xpress, the turboprop and rural air service operator.

I wonder if they will have pilots to operate the planes as well.

That sounds very good. An A332 makes a lot more sense then a 333 if you're intending to fly from KUL to Europe. Any idea when we can expect the confirmation of the info posted above by FAX?

Here's more on the potential order.

"We hope to sign a deal for 15 new aircraft by the end of this month, for delivery, most likely in the third quarter," he said.

Order at the end of the month for delivery in the third quarter? He's not ordering new from the manufaturer.

I hope they get the T7. It seems more to have more range but I have a feeling the A330 will get this one because of crew qualification.

Just curious...the article says they can't find planes at the "right price" IE they are too expensive to lease, so they will wait to buy their own.

How is buying your own, brand new airplane, cheaper than leasing a used one?

Oh no... a one year delay. My friend plans to fly to Australia with AirAsia X, since it will offer a very low fare. Anyway, i would prefer a T7 for them, as they are operating A320 for their short medium haul operation. It would be nice to see a great T7 at LCC-T KLIA. Can't wait to see what the decision is....

I would think in the long run it would be cheaper to buy, over lease. But it cost more upfront to buy, and many airlines, new and old, lease planes while waiting for their slots.

Anyway, it is quite unbelieveable for me, 100 A320, 15 or more 330/T7. How an Airline like Airasia can purchase this big amount of equipment?

He's reffering to the third quarter of 2008, and he is going to order new aircraft.
