Man Cuts Seatbelts Onboard SAS Flight

It is hard to believe that this is even possible in this day and age security being as tight as it is.

According to Norwegian publication Aftenposten an 18 year-old man was allowed to carry a pocket knife on board an SAS flight between the coastal town of Haugesund and OSL yesterday. From what I understand this practice is allowed as long as the intention is not to use the knife for "terrorist purposes".

However, this young individual used the knife to cut the seatbelts off from several of the seats during flight. How many, the article does not mention. Other passengers on the same flight found the experience frightening. The man was detained by police on arrival in Oslo.

You can sit here and wonder if the practice of allowing even small knifes onboard makes any sense. Granted, this appear to be a very small knife with a 3 cm blade. But still, even a small knife is enough not just to cause damage to airline property; in my mind it is still enough to inflict injuries to individuals too.

There is no mention of what punishment this man has coming.

Do they just take the word of the passenger carrying the knife?

No matter how small the knife is it shoudlnt have been alowed into the cabin, why would any passenger need a knife in flight?

Aer Lingus - Low Fares. Way Better.

It is almost implicit in the article that it was a known fact that this individual was in posession of the knife prior to boarding the flight. So his promise not to use the knife for "terrorism" must have gone a long way with the security staff.

I believe the EU directive when it comes to security allows for knives with blades 6 cm or shorter to be carried as part of someone's hand luggage as long as the intent is "not to use the device for terrorism". A pretty naive directive if you ask me that puts way too much trust into someone's word.
