Shorter Seat Backs On Some Delta Aircraft

Why on the domestic 767-300s, as well as the now retired 727s, 767-200s, and L-1011-1s, the seat back is shorter than on most other Delta aircraft? At least this is what appears on the photos:

Does anyone know a reason for the shorter seatbacks?

Also, this has been asked before, but was never answered: How will Delta fit the PTVs on the domestic 767-300s? As you can see with the image, the seat back is too short to fit a PTV. Hopefully they are not all placed in the armrests, making all the armrests immovable. I hope that the domestic 767-300s get new seats with adjustable headrests. It has been stated that the leather seat covers are a stopgap solution, and that Delta will eventually be getting new seats. I wonder what the 737-700s and 777-200LRs will have in economy. In addition to adjustable headrests, I would like to see extendable food tables.

Also, does anyone know who makes the seats for Delta's aircraft?

The seats in the photos appear to be completely different models so you can't assume the seatbacks are shorter on one than another. The tables in the seats you think have the short seatbacks also appear to be a couple of inches larger (top to bottom) which take up more of the seatback. I doubt there's any significant difference in the actual height of the seaback in any of the seats in the four photos.

Extendable tables serve little or no purpose in Y class at typical 31 or 32 inch seat pitches. With seat pitches getting tighter while passengers are getting heavier (especially in the USA), the edge of the table is usually almost touching most passengers' stomachs anyway. Extendable tables also have more parts and require more maintenance.

Maybe the tray table is simply larger. If you look at the space between the top of the tray table and the top of the seat, the domestic 767-300 and L-1011-1 have less of it. I don't see how Delta can fit PTVs on the domestic 767-300s.

Maybe Delta can use the seats that were once used on some retired aircraft. The 737-200s, 737-300s, MD-11s, L-1011-250s, and L-1011-500s (pictured) all had the standard-style seats. The 727s, 767-200s, and L-1011-1s (pictured) had the "short" seat backs.

They're not. They're not very close either. Probably about a 4-5 inch difference.



The proper term is "on final" not "on finals" bud...

From my experience, older aircraft tend to have lower seat backs. I dont know the specifics of the DL configuration, BUT on WW the top of their seats is slightly above my shoulders. Whereas on FR 738s it comes most of the way up my head. EI and BD are currently the best though as the head rest is just that...all of my head is supported without slouching.

I guess it just depends on the seats the airine chooses to install.

The seats on the L-1011s are not the original seats, they were installed in the 1980s. The L-1011-1s got the shorter seat backs, while the L-1011-250s and L-1011-500s got the taller ones.

Definately not a fan of the lower seat backs. I noticed it last week when i was doing ATL-SFO on a 764 then returning SFO-ATL on a 763. Any person of mid range hieght or taller (im 6'0) would notice. The INTL 763's are a little better, but the 764 and 777 seat back height is MUCH more comfortable. Even the MD88s are better than the domestic 763's.


Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

Well, I hope that Delta installs new seats with headrests and sliding tray tables. It has been stated that the 777-200LRs and 737-700s will feature a new type of seat. Recaro offers the thin yet comfortable CL3610 seats. Thompson Solutions offers an unusual seating option featuring wider, staggered seats. Weber offers the rather nice 5751 series seats. The Centaurus seats from AvionInterios are also nice.

Noticed the short seatbacks myself on a 763 from ATL-MAN, I'm 6' 4". THE most uncomfortable flight I have had in a long while. I am avoiding DL on international at least, for that very reason.

The seat backs on the international 767-300s are taller than the domestic 767-300s, but not as good as the 767-400s or the 777s.
