According to Chinese media "Beijing Daily", Hainan Airlines plans to submit application to join oneWorld this year. JAL, soon to be the oneWorld member, will be the main sponsor.

The 4th largest airline in China says intense competition on international market is the main reason why it pursue to join the alliance.

Meanwhile, it has already signed codeshare deal on Beijing-Osaka with JAL, with each operates daily flight. It'll also operate Beijing-St. Petersburg service in May.

No. It is a group of its own, competing with Air China and China Eastern and Southern

The only reason I asked was becase CX has links with Air China and China Eastern has already been mentioned by the OW group. So I found it strange that Hainan with no connections to either group would choose OW.

Anyone else find this a bit suprising/ strange or was this expected?

What are Hainan's International destinations/ fleet/ profits like?? (link?)

I think that Hainan has links with new OW member MA , and , apparently JL are very keen on them and are reputed to be supporting their application . Bear in mind that MU has had a number of problems recently - they seem to have sacked a large number of their senior management in the last year or so , and I believe at one stage they were investigating a "merger" with ( ie takeover by ) Shanghai Airlines . There have also been persistent rumours of SQ looking at taking a stake in MU , something else which could potentially derail their application to join OW

YEP, MA and HA have a pretty well working cooperation and JAL is known of it's support for HA....

It would give Oneworld complete domination of China (in addition to South America).

With Dragon Air coming onboard later this year, not to mention JAL and Cathay Pacific, they have the country covered. Hainan would just be a lucky bonus!

I don't know hat the Oneworld board will think, they have always stated that they only want to have about 12 members in total. Hainan would also have to meet strict criteria, does anyone know if they are profitable?

As a Oneworld member myself, I say the more airlines the better!  Big grin

"domination" is a bit of a strong term to describe OWs China coverage ( although I accept it is applicable for their South America coverage ) .

Star will soon have CA and FU to cover China both domestically and internationally and already has excellent China coverage from it's four existing Asian members SQ/TG/NH/OZ/ as well as AC and UA from North America , LH/SK from Europe and NZ from New Zealand

oneWorld have nothing to do with Air China despite CX has shares in Air China and vice versa.

I knew that much- Air China are slated to join Star this year. I was merely inquiring as to which airlines may have had links (any) to another one. I was not suggesting that Air China had anything to do with OneWorld. Please read more carefully next time.

Could be quite interesting for oneworld

I was disappointed when Air China went to * really, CX have a share in Air China and I always assumed CA would go to oneworld. Hoepfully this could fill a gap, then I think oneworld has everywhere pretty much covered, except maybe Indonesia area, but thats covered fairly well by QF. CIS would also be good for oneworld, i can see S7 maybe becoming a member as they expand and modernise.

Anyway, all in all good news, not my first choice for oneworld, but if accepted they could be a good and valuable member

Air China into Star Alliance was one of the bargains that CA asked during the CA/CX deal negotiation.
