I was looking on United's site, but couldnt find any info. I know I can use my United miles on a full ticket on any of the Star Alliance partners (including Thai), but what about upgrades? is that possible? If so, what base fare would I have to buy to upgrade to business class? I heard that you can "request" the upgrade, but cannot confirm it at the time of purchase. How does that work??

Also, I saw on the Thai site that you can upgrade service on the day of travel for a fee. Any info on this??

thanks!

Late in 2005 Star Alliance launched upgrade awards that could be used between a few partner airlines. During 2006 additional airlines started to participate including Thai Airways.

I haven't found a way to do it online yet. Your options are to call a UA res agent or simply keep your fingers crossed and request one at check-in. Keep in mind that many heavily discouted Y-class fares can't be upgraded.

ok, talked to United, but the agent wasnt really sure how it worked. She wasnt sure if the upgrade happened at the time of booking or if it was space-available at the time of check-in.

Also, can I use this on a ticket that I am buying for my friend or is it only for me??

anyone else have anymore info?

thanks!

As far as I know it can only be done online and it works for Y and B fares (full economy ticket) only.
I did it before and worked fine. You will also get a confirmation once you upgrade went through.

Keep calling until you get someone who knows how it works. With any Star Alliance stuff you need to take a poll. You can also use ANA's Star Alliance award tool if you are a FF member (it is free to sign up) to see if space is available. Also, functionally some *A stuff is poorly implemented and highly dependent on a check-in or gate agent knowing exactly what the procedure is. So even if something should be doable, an unwilling or ill informed agent will thwart your efforts. Best to pin it down way beforehand.

it depends on the airline. I know that on LH in the past one must have a voucher from UA that normally is issued by mileage plus and takes two weeks to arrive at your home.

You cannot use UA miles to upgrade on ALL Star Alliance. Limited. I have upgraded from Business to First on both TG and LH, via the UA website. It wokred well, once availabilty came through. Here is what you do:

Go to the UA Website

1. Drop down the Mileage Plus menu
2. Go to Redeem Miles
3. Look at the bottom of the first column for Star Alliance upgrade awards.

Then follow the screens. It does work !!!!!
