SIA Reviewing Its PPS - More Selective Criteria

SIA has announced it will be reviewing the eligibility conditions for its Priority Passenger Service Club.

In essence, it will make it much more difficult for flyers to qualify for its elite programme, and may even stop admitting life members.

Seems like the carrier wants to strengthen its premium class business by offering even more perks and making it even more exclusive - although i'm not sure how this will affect its average frequent flyer who may switch allegience.

IMHO its tough enough as it is so it will make little difference to the average traveller.. i would guess only the ultra rich or buiness travellers manage to become PPS club members.

24 odd legs of J class in a year is alot.... not normally done by an average traveller...

Its gonna make not much of a difference.

Frankly, the suggestion of a revenue minimum of SGD25,000 (roughly USD16-17K) a year per passenger (as mentioned in the sqtalk website link) isn't that difficult at all (if that number is indeed correct). PPS pax. already have to be flying J or F anyway today to qualify. That's only about 4-5 roundtrip J trips a year transoceanic....

True, but it looks like standard PPS will no longer be able to access the First Class lounge when flying in Raffles Class, which is in effect downgrading a status that has become harder to achieve. They seem to giving absolutely nothing in return either.

You've got to admire their confidence (or arrogance). Only SQ would attempt something like this!.

It's still the old man mentality that only those who fly Business and First class are privileged enough to join the Club.

What happens to the exec who flies twice monthly between SIN and Europe but his travel budgets only permit full fare economy tickets. That's easily S$2500 a ticket. After a year, he would have spent over S$50K.. but is he allowed in the club? Noooooo.

Now that's just plain descrimination!

Does some one remember the Frequent Traveller Programm with LH in the early 80's? At that time the threshold was
20.000 DEM p.a.You would get a Yellow Card (I still have one from my uncle) which shows that you are special customer. That was years before Miles and More came in.

You know, SQ's FFP is probably one of the few programs out there that only caters to the elite. This is to ensure the exclusivity and to prevent the dilution of the premium products offered. For the masses, complaints abound about how difficult it is to navigate the perks. For the high heeled, compliments for making it exclusive and this is evident by the program being voted one of the best.

Eg. on any given day, would anyone pay to fly in First Class in UA, AA or DL? Nope, they are mostly upgrades.

I've been reading in various forums (Flytalk, A.net, etc) about how the SQ Silver Kris lounge is often overcrowded and such. Well, it seems SQ has been listening and taking corrective action on limiting the number of people who can access these lounges.

I hope those who whinge about the change in PPS qualification aren't the same people who complained in the first place :P

Remember SQ still have the KrisFlyer program which is similar to any other airlines' frequent flyer programs with Blue, Silver and Gold status. And comes with it, all the benefits that associate with the status. And it's free to join!

So basically, what are some people whinging about?

It is what it is - an elite FFP - but it's by no means the best, in fact quite the opposite with very stingy miles earnings compared to most others, and for the 77W they've closed out all *A award inventory and DOUBLED the miles required for their own Krisflyer members !!!.

Who votes it as one of the best then ?.

I think a few people are getting confused between PPS Club and the KrisFlyer program.

Granted, PPS is a sub-set of the KrisFlyer program, but it has a very different target. It is used to recognise the so-called front end customers. Is it an elite program? Of course, that is the main purpose of PPS Club - to recognise and reward frequent First and Business class passengers. Simple as that.

So if your travel pattern does not allow you to qualify for PPS, then of course it's not the status you should be aiming for.

As for Krisflyer being stingy. It may not be the most generous FFP out there, but it's definitely not the most stingy.

Exhibit A - Qantas FFP needs 60000 points for an award return economy SYD-SIN-SYD. KrisFlyer need only 46750 after the 15% discount by redeeming online.

There are plenty of other FFP out there, most of them free to join, so if Krisflyer remains popular, it must be doing something right for most people.

I have been a PPS member for about 3 years now. I do about 100k per year and just over 50K of that is in business class which is why of course I qualify for PPS. I always fly SQ unless they don't go where I want to, or they have no seats available, which happens a frustrating amount, especially between Singapore and Hong Kong.

For me the best part of PPS is

Always being able to use the lounge even if flying economy or another carrier - (best part of it)
Raffles class check in - (makes check in very quick)
I usually get addressed by my full and correct name wherever I am sitting (so what)

The only other perks I have got are

I have once been given head phones from business class whilst sitting in economy - (don't need them)
I have once been bought a glass of champagne from business class with out asking - (don't like the stuff, prefer beer)

I have never, ever been upgraded out of goodwill.

My membership goes through to February 2008. If the rules change significantly which may prevent me renewing I will switch airlines immediately to either Cathay or Emirates, especially for long haul.

They're stopping the overcrowding in the First lounge and now moved it all into what will be an overcrowded Business Class lounge !!. Excellent work.

That they do, but even if you reach KF Gold you still can't get in their best lounge(s). Having said that, they are now making it harder to qualify as PPS, and if you do, they are taking away access to the F lounge. So there is no difference from someone who has never flown SQ before on a C/J cabin ticket and a PPS as to which lounge you can use. Madness.

What incentives are there for requalifying, other than the good old Asian status obsession ?
