Malaysia Airlines will launch new low-cost, no-frill carrier called "FireFly", which will take off in April, fare as low as RM9

The new service will use Penang as its operations base and hub, initially serving mainly destinations in northern Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand.

Firefly will link Penang to Phuket and Koh Samui seven times a week as well as Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Baru and Langkawi 14 times weekly.

Another one joins the ever increasing LCC flock in SE Asia. MH will probably look to win back some of the ground it lost to Air Asia and the like. Good for the consumers.

Cheers

What will they use to Koh Samui? I think the runway is too short for 737s to land there, maybe they will use the 3 Fokker 50s which didn't go to FAX?
It's interesting that Bangkok Airways is now willing to share their own Koh Samui airport with more cariers, like Berjaya and now FireFly.

nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Firefly will indeed be using Fokker 50. Two of them at start

....following the IB example with XG

For sure, this will be not the last time that a standard carrier creates a "low-cost" subsidiary.

Time flies! Enjoy life!

= Iberia is hardly the trend-setter on this one. I can think of SOOOOO many more attempts prior  Wink.

FireFly - what a name...

Hong Kong is not China. Not better or worse, just different.

I like the name ... could be an interesting livery.

I like the aircraft a lot less; F50s are nice, but as a low cost aircraft? No way; they should be using 737-400s.

On a report that MAS was planning to set up a new domestic and regional operation using Penang as its base, Idris said MAS had submitted its application to the government to provide a different offering but declined to elaborate.

Quoting Isz1 (Reply 92):
first... MAS BEE, MAS B ... luckily now they go for Fire Fly ... orange is their new corporate color/image. About 18 or so ex MAS F50 cabin crew currently rated for B737/A330 already attended the briefing... did their F50 Safety Emergency Procedures class. PEN is their hub... now 1 MAS F50 already in PEN.

We have a plane at AMS with that name. It's the fire trainer of the fire brigade. Big grin

No one has spare time to go through 100+ posts started 16 days ago just to make sure it don't get a duplicate thread. Even the search engine is not smart enough to do so
