It's foggy in YYZ tonight. I live near the approach path to YYZ's 23 and 24R. The aircraft are at around 2500-3000ft around my house. I would say my house is around where the aircraft enter the localizer path. Tonight I am noticing 4 spotlights spiraling into 1 and then spiraling outwards back into 4. This keeps repeating over and over. 23 and 24R are in use for landings tonight. Do these lights have anything do with the approach? Its not an aircraft. Is this aviation related or is it something else?

Those things are damn powerful.
I was flying into KIX one evening. It was dark and something similar to those lights (they are common on top of pachinko parlours) was in operation. We must have still been at around 6000/7000 ft. Maybe even higher. As it twirled around we flew directly through its beam several times. It was highly visible as a very bright spot on the ground.
Made me wonder if we would have been visible from the ground, lit up by search lights WWII style.
