A few hours ago, during a Melbourne press conference, Etihad announced to become title sponsor of the Dutch Spyker Formula 1 team. Real estate-developer Aldar will also sponsor the team, so the next 3 years the team will be known as the Etihad Aldar Spyker F1 Team.

Interesting development that after the disappearence of the Tobacco industry, now the airline industry uses Formula 1 as an advertisement platform. First Emirates with the McLaren team, now Etihad with spyker.

This would tie in with the announcement that Abu Dhabi is to stage a GP in the next few years

It is not new,

Years ago Saudia sponsored the Williams F1 team winning the championship in 1980 with Alan Jones.
During the 90's Korean Air had a sponsordeal with Benetton ( 1998 AFAIK ).
It's a nice trend, for both aviation and F1! MY two favorites combined!

I wish the Spyker F1 team all the best in the upcoming season!

And FedEx did for a while too.

And of course minardi was owned by Paul Stoddart and sponsored by his European Aviation airline in the past.

Khalifa also sponsored motor racing for a while - but not F1. Alitalia famously sponsored world rally Lancias and Fiats back in the 70s. BA also sponsored a rally car years ago too !

Qantas of course have also been a heavy backer of the Australian Grand Prix.

Can Etihad also be lured to AMS? I would love to see a middle eastern carrier at AMS. IIRC since Kuwait Air left, there are no middle-eastern carriers serving AMS (I don't count Iran as the middle-east)

And since you are as  old  as me  wink  you probably remember Saudia being a major sponsor of Williams when Alan Jones won the title.

I do - and here is an even earlier Saudia Williams - circa 1978.

and while we're in the 70s, its a good excuse to put up a pic of the Alitalia Stratos too......

Woow, I think I still have a die-cast model of Alan Jones' car and Saudia decals on it. Am I that old?  Wow! I guess it's better for us to stop looking back into history of car races. Otherwise, Skidz might jump in here and bomb us with photos from his youth (when Ascari and Fangio were rocking and rolling)  Silly

Cheers mate. Thanks for those great pics.  bigthumbsup

What about 1976 James Hunt McLaren?  Smile

BTW, in my opinion, JPS colours were the best colurs ever in F1 history.

You bet I am. Big grin Will they open some veteran's forum here soon?

So, why is High class Etihad going for sponsoring a thrid class F1 Team???
It just doesn't suite them.

because they have the intention to become a first class team, they have the money, they have the people, only thing they need now is time to create a top team...

Was it around that time that Williams drivers were forbidden from celebrating with champagne as some hypocritic sheik would get his panties in a twitch?

Toyota has the intention to become a first class team, they have LOTS of money, they have LOTS of talented people and they have had enough time to create a top team. And yet, they still suck at it!

Anyway, this year my heart will be with Ferrari (as usual) but I can't help pushing for Honda and their fantastic new livery / environmental project to succeed.

Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

I think this is the wrong way.... Formula one isn't the most enviroment friendly sport in the world.
If they are really pushing this project, then stop Formula One and put the money in the development of Hybrid cars.

Nevertheless I'm a huge Formula One fan and I can't wait for the seasons' opener in MEL.
