I just came across some interesting info. According to the magazine Texas Monthly http://www.texasmonthly.com/mag/issues/public/feature.php in a story this month on airports in Texas, Continential accounts for close to a whopping 80% of IAH's traffic - the most dominant of any carrier at a major US airport. Talk about hub dominance in a market. If not for the presence of Southwest at HOU, Houston would be totally screwed on the price of airfares.
What other major US airports are dominated by one carrier like IAH is dominated by CO? Maybe MIA with AA? PHX with HP? DIA with UA? Comments appreciated.

I heard that Northwest is very dominant at their hubs at Memphis, Minneapolis, and Detroit and keeps the fares there very high. Also, here in Wichita, Kansas, we aren't dominated by one carrier, we have mjor airlines, but not low fares, and the prices here are quite high.

CO at IAH? Nope. As mentioned WN's fares at HOU keep the Houston market reasonable for the most part.
AA at MIA? Not even close. In fact MIA is barely an AA "fortress." AA accounts for something like 55% (could be less) of the market at MIA. Also, because of AA's weak position at MIA Int'l carriers have crept in with strong frequencies to their respective hubs, American Eagle is challenged by Gulfstream International Airlines (the airport's #3 carrier) which operates for TWC, COEx, and Copa. Moreover, Airtran puts over 25 other markets one stop away with low fares. Additionally, FLL is 35 mins. away and boasts fare-killers: DLX, MetJet, WN, Midway, JetBlue, Airtran and Spirit.
HP at PHX? As mentioned, WN Effect.
UA at DIA? Frontier keeps a handle on things

ATL would be nothing except for Airtran. Airtran has done wonders keep last minute fares low for travel in the east coast, and most markets in Florida (Not PBI though!)

It may be but two other significant airports are less than an hour away. And one, Kennedy, has seen a sucessful low fare operator start up. JetBlue now serves 11 markets out of JFK. Spirit has built a sizeable presence at LGA with service to 8 cities.
Also, EWR has several low fare competitors of their own including:
Delta Express, Spirit Airlines, Airtran, and Midway

Southwest has a significant presence at Cleveland. IAH is dominated by CO, but CO is only the fifth largest airline. Airports where sheer dominance is worrisome,
is places like ATL, Denver, Detroit, and Minneapolis.
