VS Seating Question - What Could This Mean?

All,

I am on the VS site choosing my seats for VS19/20 later this and next month.

VS20 is available, and I have my seat of choice, but for VS19 I get:

"London to San Francisco, Thu 29 Mar, 11:00
We're sorry. The seat map is not available at this time. Your seats will be assigned at check in. "

What could cause this? My initial thoughts were that VS haven't decided if to use a 744 or 346 for the flight, but it's always a 744 so I'm not sure that my theory is right. Any ideas?

TIA,

Matt

Maybe the flight is oversold and they need volunteers or an unscheduled change of equipment. Just my  twocents .

Perhaps they've reached the limit of pre-assigned seats for the flight.

That's a different message - I've had that before.

I'm worried by the first response!

Check in Online and arrive in plenty of time.

Have a great trip. I'll be following you there in a few weeks.

Wouldn't they be likely to upgrade passengers on this flight if seats remain open in Upper Class?

Likely for Premium Economy pax to be upgraded to J and Full Y pax to Premium. I wouldn't hold out hope of an upgrade unless you meet the above.

Also looks like some additional space has become available:

I'm really not looking forward to the prospect.

I've never flown a 744 and not had a window seat, and I'm really hoping that I don't get stuck in the middle tomorrow.

Only 60% of seats are available for pre-assignment. The other 40% are allocated at check in on the day of departure, so my advice would be to check in as early as possible.
