Is Airbus "Saving Up" Orders For Airshow Yet?

Unless I am mistaken, Airbus likes to announce orders at Farnborough and Le Bourget and other airshows. I am wondering, when does Airbus start suppressing order announcements. I imagine it's after Dec 31 since one has the annual "sales contest" between Airbus and Boeing to take into account.

So how far ahead of Le Bourget did/will Airbus start asking airlines if they would not mind keeping quiet about an agreed order? Anyone in the know able to cast some light on how this PR exercise functions?

Thanks in advance for any illumination.

Traditionally Airbus has held back on announcing new orders until the Paris/Farnborough Air Show. I would imagine that this year Airbus will try and do it differently.

Due to the various issues involving Airbus/Eads, Power8, weak US dollar, and fierce competition from Boeing. Airbus will have to try and gather some positive PR. If Airbus manages to secure a new customer for the A350/A380 then they should announce it as soon as possible as this may influence other carriers.

They do have a large pending orderbook, so they may be holding some in reserve.

And while I understand WINGS' argument, these issues may influence Airbus to indeed wait until Paris and announce a slew of new orders, especially any for the A380 and A350XWB, as the media coverage will be much higher.

Right now, most of these sub-10 frame orders are appearing buried in the Business section of most papers. But a dozen of them announced at once would be big news and tied into a paper's already expanded aerospace coverage because of it being the major air show would probably push that news closer to the front page of at least the Business section.

Also, Boeing will most likely announce the 787-10 and her launch customers, so Airbus will want "big news" like new A380 and A350XWB orders or a massive A320 family order available to counter the Boeing announcement's impact.

Didn't I read a quote from Al-Baker on the "QR - 80 x A350XWB" thread that it was intended to announce this order at this year's Paris Air Show?

Although an order may not be made public, I suspect that Airbus (and Boeing) can and do tell potential customers off the record of confidence-inspiring orders already in the bag.

Well with EK you would never know... the 100 787-10/A350 has been around for a while, but just out of interest, where did you get those numbers for the 748i?

Ever since the 748i was launched people have speculated about EK getting the 748i. Nearly 1,5 years and many A380 delays later EK has still to order the passenger version of the 748. Looking at an article last week in ATW, it doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon.

That's much more likely and according to Mr. al-Baker additional A380s (beyond excercising the 2 options) might be ordered. No word on the amount of A380s that's being condsidered.

For A350s? I dont know but in terms of size & range, the A350 could theretically be capable of replaceing the entire EK fleet of A330/A340/777.

Also, they have a solid performer in the 777-200ER and 777-200LR so no reason to sacrifice sales for those when you don't have to.

My thoughts also. Boeing will (and should) put off launching the 787-10 until they can milk the 777 for what its worth. Once the 787-10 is on the market its goodbye to new customer 772 sales, something of a self inflicted injury on Boeings part.

Aye, but if they don't do it, Airbus will, so they have little choice. And the 772LR will still be a more capable platform then the initial 787-10 in terms of payload, range, and (probably) payload over range, so...

...which might have something to do with Boeing's public decision post-2002 to cease saving order announcements until air shows.

Yes but the -LR is also limited in its appeal, as only certain airlines need the range, and most of these have already ordered it! The freighter has a good future however as it will not have a direct competitor for a long time.

Range alone is not why the LR sells. It can carry more payload to the maximum range of a 772ER then the 772ER can because it is not fuel-volume/weight limited at that range. DL, for example, can fly a 772ER ATL-BOM, but not at full-payload 365 days a year. With the 772LR, they can so that is why they switched their remaining frames.
