NW DC10 Diverts To GLA

A passenger jet carrying 200 people was forced to divert to Glasgow Airport after a fire alert on board.

The Northwest Airlines DC-10 was en route to Washington DC in the USA from Amsterdam when the alarm was raised, and it was diverted to the airport.

Firefighters at the airport examined the American-owned jet after it landed and found no evidence of a fire.

Typical. The day I decide to go Christmas shopping NW decides to visit GLA and on a day when they are landing over my house as well! What I find rather strange is that when NW were actually meant to be flying to GLA they diverted to their 'spiritual home' of PIK at what seemed like the drop of a hat for the most trivial reasons ie slight fog or snow when no one else diverted. I wouldn't have been surprised if this had diverted to PIK but I was surprised it came here. Probably the pilots who used to fly to PIK in the 'old days' have retired and there isn't the same Prestwick nostalgia now.

Im surprised it didnt divert to PIK as well, it is a much quieter airport! Oh well, I suppose you wont get to see any more NW DC10s at GLA again. Has it left agin yet, onwards to the US?

I don't know if its gone yet. I'm not sure when it actually came in (maybe I could check what the scheduled departure from AMS is and add a couple of hours as an estimate). I suppose it depends how long it was on the ground before it got the all clear. If it was quickly it probably left soon after but if it took a while the crew might have been out of hours. From that point of view it would be easier to position a replacement crew here than PIK. They are still landing this way (05) so it would take off over Renfrew/Clydebank/Glasgow so I wouldn't see it.

I just checked the flight status. NW0035 arrived GLA 1238 and departed GLA 1615. It says 'delayed due to non-scheduled maintenance'. NW35 used to be our GLA-BOS. Not sure if thats a coincidence or what!

I am a doctor at the local Paisley hospital and we were put on full emergency standby for the Northwest
DC-10, incase there were any casualties. Luckily there were none, and I got home on time for my tea !

Plane in fire alert drama over Paisley
AN airliner with 200 people on board was yesterday involved in a mid-air drama over Paisley after fears of a fire in the hold.

A major alert was sparked at the airport after the pilot of the Northwest DC10 radioed Glasgow Airport Traffic Control and said: "There is a fire in the hold." The drama happened an hour after the Northwest DC10 left Amsterdam bound for Washington.
During the flight over Scotland he noticed a red warning light flash indicating there was a fire on board.
As the aircraft approached the runway for an emergency landing smoke was seen belching from the fuselage.
And one eye-witness claimed he saw what looked like flames coming from the aircraft.
Some 25 fire engines and ambulances waited on the runanway ready to go into action as the plane approached around 12.20pm.
An eye-witness said: "The passengers on board would have been terrified wondering if there was a fire on board and how bad it was.
"I can only presume the passengers were all warned of what was happening.
"I am sure I could see what looked like flames coming from the aircraft when it landed. There was also loads of smoke.
After checks being made by the firefighters the aircraft moved unaided several hundred yards to Stand 7 which is part of the main airport terminal.
The plane remained at Stand 7 for more than three hours and during that time passengers and crew remained on-board.
Around 2.15pm an ambulance crew was spotted going on-board the aircraft after a woman passenger complained of feeling unwell.
The paramedics tended to her and she did not have to leave the plane.
A spokesman for Glasgow Airport confirmed there had been an incident involving a Northwest Airline DC10.
But the spokesman added: "There was apparently no fire. All aircraft produce smoke on landing and this seems to have been the case." He said am ambulance was called for one passenger who was taken ill after landing.
"But she is OK," he said.
There was no serious interruption to flights as a result of the incident.
A spokeswoman for Northwest Airlines said: "The fire indicator light in the cockpit indicated there was a fire in the cargo hold.
"At the time the fire indicator light came on Glasgow was the nearest airport where the plane could land.
"In the event the fire indicator light was discovered to be faulty and the plane was able to continue its journey."
