These days, we in BCN are in the middle of a great debate about civil aviation facilities in Catalonia, especially about the future of the BCN airport. There are news articles in all the major Catalan newspapers almost in a daily basis pressing the Spanish Government to give away the control of BCN, some of them are lobbying about the regional Government of Catalonia to take control over it, some other are asking to be fully privatized, in addition they all agree in one thing: They're all convinced that BCN has a chance to become a a major transcontinental hub when the new south terminal is completed. They are even talking about an Star Alliance hub in the new terminal for those flights.
I really can't see this happening mainly because of MAD and CDG being so close.
IB's decision to leave BCN in favour of their low cost ClickAir is adding even more fuel to those that see some kind of conspiracy against the Catalan interests.
AENA is conducting a survey among the airlines interested in the new terminal about their future plans and the decision is due to be unveiled in September, so we will have to wait and see.
BCN is indeed growing (about 10% in 2006 according to AENA) it will eventually get some widebodies, but we will never see more than few widebody tails in a row, it will mainly stay as a B737 & A320 airport if you ask me.
So what do you think about BCN expansion? Do you believe that it has any chance to be some kind of a hub?
What do you think who will get first to the new terminal...
