I've heard that VS have ordered 7 new B747-400s.
I was told yesterday that these are to replace the B747-200s (I'm sure they have more than 7).
If this is true (which I doubt) why have they recently received several B747-200s from Air New Zealand and why are they apparently getting 'new' B747-200s aswell as the 400s?

Cheers,
Jamie.

The 7 747-400s that VS currently has on order are for expansion and to ease the current strain that is on the fleet. When the A340-600s begin to arrive in 2002 (at the earliest) then it would most likely seem that some of the 747-200 fleet (The older Pratt & Whitney powered aiframes) would be sold off or retired to the boneyard. The majority of VS's 747-200s are definately in VS's long term plan as they are having cockpit upgrades, so I wouldn't be to worried about seeing all of them leave the fleet. In fact, in the latest Airliner World, it was reported that VS was in negotiations with several airlines in order to acquire 5 more second hand 747-200s. With the order being placed for 5 747-400s though, I do not know if they are still in negotiations. Currently VS operates 11 747-200s

In all reality, they continue to serve as the backbone of the fleet. They operate out of both LHR and LGW and fly mostly to North America along with Delhi and the Carribean.

I just went to Virgin Atlantic's website to see if I could find out any new information. What I did see was how their route structure has literally grown in leaps and bounds over the last 6 months to a year and a half. Not only have they opened up several new routes to Delhi, Las Vegas and Cape Town, but they have also added more daily flights to several other locations. This is all while their fleet numbers have stayed the same. In my opinion buying 5 more 747-200s would be a good idea. As I stated before, the current fleet is being put through the ringer and their is little downtime for maintenance. What amazes me is the fact that some of the original 747-200s still get up and go to work everyday without a complaint ( ie cancelling flights)

They want to get rid of the P & W powered a/c as they are unable to comply with the next set of noise regs.
