Can someone give me the current status of the 34R spotters park? I heard it was closed, but saw the below pics. Can you park and the golf course and walk in?

I nagged the photographer to pop in on here and post a response. He runs slcspotters.com and can probably give some good insight.

He may have taken these from the golf course...

This probably should go to the photo forum but yes, you can park at the Wingpoint Golf Course and walk around outside the fence area. Also you can walk into the old North Temple Street right of way road where they have set up a bike path. But the Airport Police will be sensitive to those with cameras especially with big bulky lenses. An OO pilot radioed into the tower on me and sent an officer after me about a year and a half ago, and the officer politely suggested I not pack such a big lens (A Canon ESM 70-300mm on My 30D) into such a sensitive area. For runway 34L you can park in the Microtel culdesac and walk into a similar set-up. Here are a couple of recent shots from there:

I believe the airport administration deemed it a "secuirty risk." Because terrorists love to shoot down airliners from exposed locations with plenty of police presence and limited exit routes. They would NEVER think to go 1/2 mile south of the airport, along the arrival corridor, and HIDE amongst the heavy industrialized area.

Plain and simple, the airport administration and TSA are idiots. They would rather spend time and money chasing people away from multiple locations on the airport grounds than keep an eye on people in one controlled enviroment. I know people used to take thier lunch breaks here, family's would come out to watch the airplanes and it was a great way to promote the "friendliness" of the airport, IMHO.

I have emailed the admin numerous times on this subject. They now either ignore me or DHS is keeping an eye on me.

Thanks SLC, for FUC*ING that nice park up.

Exactly. Or sit in a hotel room watching TV while they waited hours for just the right plane to come by at eye level. Or rent an apartment nearby and watch planes for months and months, undisturbed, aligning the sights on their weapons or whatever, making sure all the equipment works properly and the weather is just right, and keeping the place clean so they can get their cleaning deposit back, waiting for just the right one to come by. Or even miles away because some SAM's have a fairly long range. Or..... the point exactly.

Didn't someone do this in SLC once? Something with a Laser or am I completely mistaken?

I think it has happened in a few places, Vegas maybe? Don't recall if SLC or not. In a lot of places someone could just sit in their back yard and shine powerful floodlights up at planes.

I was just mad they closed the park and no GOOD reason was ever given. "Security" is a bull$hit reason. Fresno has what looked to be a nice parking area, now also closed. Same BS reason. It's instances like this, and others, that reassure my skepticism in whatever "security measures" have gone in to effect since 9/11. I personally believe they are all cosmetic. No bang for the buck, I guess.

Sorry I took so long to respond - just got back from a biztrip in NYC.

The park is officially closed.* Those pictures were taken from the raised landscaping across the road from where the park was. To get there, you park in the Wingpointe Golf Course parking lot, walk across the bridge and then you're there. Find one of the couple big rocks to stand on and shoot away. You can actually walk there from the terminals, I do it all the time. It's about 1.25 miles, most of it on a sidewalk. Never ever had a problem when shooting from there.** (The bikepath about 30 yards away is a different story altogether...don't go there. Seriously.) And just BTW, my signiature is a little bit exxagerated  Wink Just a little bit though  Silly

It did - but not anymore.

Dave's right. Microtel is a good place for 34L - however it's mostly Delta and SkyWest - whereas 34R usually gets most of SLC's "different" airlines (HP/US, F9, B6, AA, FX, etc), as well as some DL and OO (lots of OO). *** The only problem with Microtel is that you can't shoot 34L taxis/holds/departures. Another thing to note is that Dave's shots from Microtel are of planes landing on 34R - all the way across the airport. Planes landing on 34L are much closer.

Quoting Flyorski (Reply 7):

It happened in SLC a few years ago. No problems since then.

In general the SLC police are very nice. There have been a few problems but only while on the bike path near the ILS, directly under the approach path. (Which seems justified to me) I highly suggest staying out of that area completely. Stick to the landscaping across from the old park.

* - On a side note, the old park is actually still there, just fenced and torn up. Once some airport ops guys accidently left the gate unlocked, and in about 30 minutes, 3 families showed up in the parking lot, watching planes with their very excited kids. I often see parents with kids hanging out on the landscaping or walking up to the old park's fence. It makes me sad

** - I shoot with a relatively small P&S - I don't have a big DSLR so I don't know if that makes a difference.

*** - If the 16s are in use, Microtel is one of the best departure spots. Just write off shooting up north of the airport for arrivals, unless you plan a "shoot and run." The parking garage (3rd level) is also good too, I have yet to get a photo accepted from there though. But that's camera limitations.

Hope this helps

-Jeff

I plan to set up shop with a 300mm prime on the bike path in a couple of months.

Thanks for the update.

Let us know when you do ... sometimes we have a mini SLC meet on Saturdays. Except I still haven't managed to make any of them yet. But I know others do!

AMEN!!!! Well said my friend. The same could be said for our observation lot here in Nashville at times. LOL!!!

Basically, if you are on public property, and are not inside the fence, the airport police can't say a word to you about photography unless you are breaking the law. You are allowed by the Constitution of the United States to take any photo of anything you want from public spaces (or in this case public parks, etc.) without harrassment from law enforcement officals.

You guys had a damn good new-hire airport director in Roy Williams, but your beloved mayor fired him a few months back. Considering he had put an observation area in our plans at MSY (Katrina derailed it for the time being), I'm sure he would have taken care of you guys up there.

Exactly. The TSA are f**king idiots!! Same with admin. People are always asking airport workers the flight status of a flight because the stupid reader boards in the airport are NEVER updated. And how would we know. SLC is one messed up airport. Too bad I have to work there. But at least I'm working for my favorite airline, CO.

Oh my apartment is in the perfect spot for spotting landing aircraft on 34R. Especially out my bedroom window. I need to pull out my big canon camera and take some pics.

checkmark  Don't get me started on airport politics in SLC! The entire terminal could use a demolition and a rebuild! They just take a band-aid approach to the crowding problems around the baggage claims and make a small addition here and there. No new gates for mainline DL or anyone else for that matter. No wonder why it is the butt joke of a.net!

well actually as an outsider visiting the US and SLC regularly recently I must say I think SLC isn't that bad at all... yes, the DL terminal (as in the check-in area and baggage claim) is awful, but concourses B, C and D are all right for me... certainly better than DL's facilities in JFK, ORD or SFO and on par with ATL and LAX... CVG is nicer, though...

admittedly, councourse E seems to be hell... luckily enough I've only arrived there so far, but never departed...

I'm just so glad they pretty much finished all the construction inside terminal 1. They were laying tile and stuff in front of the CO ticket counter as people were checking in. It was so rude and dust and stuff was flying everywhere. Terminal 1 looks really nice now. Now, terminal 2 looks terrible. Same with all the construction outside too. Putting in all these bridges and stuff. Don't even know what's going on. I needs a whole new look. I flew home to PDX last weekend. It felt so refreshing to be in such a nice airport. I love PDX and is my favorite airport.

Oh, anyone in SL check out the weather right now. I was just at work on the ramp and I almost lost my hat. Crap kept flying into my eyes. I could hardly drive the belt loaders around. But our planes went out on time. Which is nice. Our newark plane was early for once. It's usually always 30-45 minutes late.
