Does anyone know the history of Terminal One ?

It's original configuration? First major operator out of it? From SWA's website, they say they expanded to LAX in '82. Were they always at Terminal One? If so was this a concious choice, due to what seems to be an advantages location for a short haul airline.

Yanno..things like that  Smile

Terminal 1 opened in 1984, which was actually 2 years after Southwest started serving LAX. PSA was by far the largest carrier from the terminal and it was largely built to their specifications, but the airport opened with PSA, AirCal, Southwest, USAir and Muse Air as tenants.

From an architectural standpoint, the buliding is little changed from its early days. Aside from some reconfiguration of the baggage claim areas, the most significant changes since opening were the additions of the gates on the east (gate 1) and west (gate 2) wings of the building.

WN began service at LAX through T-3.

Other carriers that have been housed at T-1: Piedmont, Braniff V.2, and Transtates/US Air Express (which used the north end of the terminal, gates 13 and 14).

Funny you should say this. Matter of fact, it was renovated quite recently with added establishments.

Actually if you ask the airlines that make T-1 a home, its likely they would say there are too many shops and restaurants. The renovation was actually quite controversial by airlines whom would have preferred to see more gate hold space instead.

T-1 of all terminals at LAX is primarily focused on quick hop flights, with lots of folks commuting on a regular basis. Not a place meant to be hanging out at for 11 hours certainly !

Back in 1983, Southwest used TWA's gates in T3. They were just a blip on the map back then overshadowed by TWA.

There's a website called http://www.flightpath.us/ that's a museum @ LAX. Might shed some light about LAX's history.

When T1 was proposed in 1978, National Airlines was planned to be the other main tenant, along with PSA; National would have moved from T2, which they had used since they began serving LAX in 1961. Unfortunately, National merged with Pan Am before T1 was finished, and the merged airline stayed in T2.

PeoplExpress also operated from T1. It was quite a mess trying to get 400+ pax checked in for a B747
with no bag belts and the people having to be bussed to the West Pad for their flights.
