A friend and myself were talking about MIA and their service to Europe.

We were trying to figure out how many flights IB offers out of MIA. We know they do a daily MAD flight, but do they also do a BCN flight? Also, does MP do a daily flight to AMS? Are the AY flights charters? And how about LT, what do they offer to DUS?

This is roughly what we figured.

VS-LHR
BA-LHR
BA-LHR
AA-LHR
IB-MAD
AA-MAD
AA-CDG
AF-CDG
AZ-MXP
LH-FRA
LX-ZRH

From what I know...

Scheduled:

BA Double Daily to LHR.
VS Daily to LHR
AF Daily to CDG
IB Daily to MAD (Double Daily 3 days per week)
AA Daily to MAD
AA Daily to LHR (Double Daily on Saturdays)
AA Daily to CDG
AZ Daily to MXP
LX Daily to ZRH
LT 3 weekly to DUS & 3 weekly to MUC (I believe)
LH Daily to FRT

Past Scheduled Service:
LY to Helsinki (Seasonal), has not operated past two winters I believe.

MIA does get Charter service here and there from EU. Example: Eurofly from MXP, Thomascook etc.

LH also has a non-stop service to MUC, but it is only seasonal. MP flies 763s to AMS but I believe it is also seasonal. They also fly in cargo on MD11.

MP's flights to AMS are 6 times a week during the winter season, 5 times during the summer. All scheduled, not charter. On top of that many cargo flights.

The Lufthansa service to MUC wasn't operated during the last winter schedule. I don't know if LH has a spare aircraft as is it was operated a by leased B767 during the last winter period LH flew to MIA from MUC. Also the Swiss flight from ZRH is operated with a LH flight no. and it just went daily. So maybe that is enough capacity for the LH-Group. But I hope somebody knows if LH would bring back a nonstop service to MUC or not?

Not this summer. Flights operate using 747-400s just like they did during this past winter.

In my opinion there for sure is demand for the flight and a 330-300 could be filled up and so of course could a A340-300. I think LH are thinking about this flight from MUC again but LH currently does not really have the A/C for this flight.

BTW this flight does NOT operate anymore and was previously operated by a Lauda Air 767-300ER.

We know they do a daily MAD flight, but do they also do a BCN flight?

Actuallythat daily MAD flight is i fact a BCN flight. Most of Iberia's long-haul flights(IB6000) have a kind of tag-on to and from BCN. IB6123 is BCN-MAD-MIA altough a 340 is used for the long-haul and a 320-series is used for the internationalized MAD-BCN leg (Although it's a domestic flight and can carry local pax, int'l terminals are used at both MAD and BCN airports and pax have to go thru passport controls and inmigration)

The aircraft flying these sectors have plenty of "IB codeshares", one from each long-haul flight it's intended to connect to.
EX. IB6123 BCN-MAD-MIA, IB6275 BCN-MAD-ORD, the BCN-MAD leg carries both flight numbers and is flown with one aircarft.

The advantage for customers is these BCN-MAD legs on a long-haul flight are free, 0€ airfare or even less, because the ticket costs the same than a journey originating in MAD.

Good one for you guys, today IB was flying double daily to MAD from MIA; I noticed the 1st IB flight was listed in the departures board as IB to San Juan. Is San Juan not a non stop anymore? is the additional MIA flight via SJU?

Israel is sometimes considered to be in Europe. Geographically it's part of the Western Asian Levant of course, but culturally and historically it's become more akin to Europe. It's in the IATA European region, like Cyprus and Morocco.

Whatever happened to the Russian carrier that was supposed to start non-stop service to Moscow?

Excellent question. They got DOT approval very late, which did not allow them to launch the service on time. Since then, they have put plans off, but keep the dormant route authority for MIA-DME.

yes IST-MIA or IST-MIA-LAX. I think there is enough demand for IST-MIA. I see it every day at FRA. Almost every day 25-30 people are flying in from IST with LH3345 and continue to MIA with LH462

TK flew to MIA from IST for a while using 343 but thanks to 911 this route was cut. Just like MIA-VIE on Austrian.

From my understanding VS has never done seasonal equipment downgrades with MIA. MIA-LHR is a busy route and if they want to compete with AA 772 and BA 744 service I don't see why they would downgrade to 343. The only swaps I have seen VS do is between 744 and 346. But hey I guess this change! dissapointing though.

Past Scheduled Service:
LY to Helsinki (Seasonal), has not operated past two winters I believe.

AY's scheduled HEL-MIA with MD-11 was seasonal and only operated for two winters (03-04 and 04-05), first with twice weekly and then thrice weekly. After that charters have been flown with B752 via Halifax, not this winter though, I believe.

Alitalia also carries a significant amount of MIA-IST traffic. Istanbul is the single busiest connection city for Alitalia from Miami. However, despite a significant amount of MIA-IST demand, the yield isn't huge. It is a lot of VFR and leisure traffic.

I am curious if IST and TK offer enough connections for MIA passengers? LH is a much alrger airline with a larger European and African network than TK. I can't see 25-30 people being a decent enough O&D base to profitably fill a 343. And also when you consider that LY takes care of the Middle East from MIA, would a IST flight really work?

Btw...are there plans for LY to add a third or fourth weekly MIA-TLV flight?

It wasn't about connections. There is a large Turkish community in Miami, and it was largely O&D. The problem is the yield isn't great, and the fact that the stage length was so long hurt it. Atlasjet, which is a holiday airline, has considered flying to Miami. They currently do not have the aircraft to, but they do have DOT route authority for Miami-Istanbul.

Quoting B752os (Reply 23):

They actually flew MIA-MUC-VIE, in cooperation with Lufthansa. It was operated by LaudaAir, ended after 9/11, operated throughout the 1990s.

A third weekly was added this week. A fourth weekly is planned.
