Unusual Contrail, What Did I See?

Hi, all. I live on the Delaware shore and was walking along the beach today around 1pm [EDT]. We're under a major airway, mostly southwest-northeast traffic, and conditions were great today for the formation of contrails. At one point a plane, seemingly at about the same altitude as all the rest but slightly farther east [of Rehoboth Beach] and well over the Atlantic heading to the northeast, began to make a gentle yet steady turn to his left of about 150 degrees. I'd never seen a curved contrail like that before. Commercial, private or military? Is there a way to find out who and what that was? Thanks! Greg

Well, although im north of you, i live right under major jetways as well (just south of Boston, all the east coast-europe traffic) most likely what you saw was a commercial flight being cleared to a new intersection/VOR that it normally doesnt get cleared to, but in this case it did for spacing reasons, etc. then again, im just taking an educated guess.

Could have been any of the above, maybe arriving at and entering a holding fix (a racetrack pattern), a diversion for some reason, or simply a route change.

Hello,

my school is in Eastern Shore, Chestertown, MD. I have seen couple of these turns, and I guess that it may be FAA holding fix. Correct me if I am wrong, but FAA has right to put flight on hold for spacing or if the traffic is congested at the destination?

When I visited EWR last time, some flights were placed into "penalty box" and ATC stated that it was FAA delay.

Cheers,
Andrej

We would definately need more info on that. I was at the school and did see interesting contrails when I was at Lewes beach. Its most likely a military or private aircraft since most commercial ones have no where to go around here, maybe perhaps it was the daily A-10 flyovers from DC-ACY.

Thanks for the replies! I'm not sure it was an A-10 fly-over: three of those flew over as I was driving into the south end of Cape Henlopen State Park, and they were LOW. Not loud nor fast, just low. (And usually when they fly over Lewes we know it!) Penalty box and/or changes due to spacing constraints make sense to me. Still, I wonder if there's any way to go back into whatever records and find out exactly what was going on.

Yup, I can definatly say its most likely the daily A-10 fly-overs. They arn't fast at all, and not loud really, just you can tell theyre there. If you want to, you can call Andrews AFB since I believe thats where they are based. Or call DOV since they control the military aviation of our area. Not sure if you'd get any results...
