Russian Aircraft: Info Please

I realised this morning that my knowledge of Russian/Soviet-built aircraft is very limited and decided Id like to find out a bit more.

Questions:

What are the specs of the new RRJ?

Which Russian aircraft are still in production today?

Who has ordered the RRJ?

Is there a reason that the older models were not popular in the Western world?


Just a few questions, but I would like to expand my knowledge of these planes a bit, as I am under the Western stereotype that they are/were all unsafe etc

Russian aircraft production is very limited these days. A few Tu-204 family aircraft roll off the factory every now and then (I think), and recently they also finished up some Tu-154's that had been assembled a decade ago. Il-96's are also produced, and if I'm not mistaken, the Il-76 freighter, too. And that's pretty much it for passenger liners.

A bit of a shame that the misconception was spread so wide. Had it not been, we may have seen more Soviet types in service with carriers today. The TU-204 would be an alternative to the 757s

When you buy a cheap charter ticket and you end-up o/b a Russian built ac, you do not walk away. It is no the so-called safety misconception which prevent the Russian ac to be purchased in greater numbers, it is their basic economics. They transport less load at higher maintenance costs than their Western counterparts. As soon as Russia produce market efficient planes (RRJ for ex.), they will sell like the others.

Tablisavia has a 134 from TBS-KBP-TBS I believe Sunday only. Your best bet would prolly be inter Ukraine flights. I'm looking at doing a bunch myself this summer. I'd really like to snag an IL62 flight.

BTW the Russian visa application process really isn't that bad. It's just like filling out a job application.

I wouldn't fear applying for Russian visa if I was you. It's not really that bad. Just go to your local travel agent and they should be able to work things out for you (at least they did in my case). You have to fill an application and in a couple of weeks you'll have the visa in your passport.

I'd definitely encourage you to visit Russia. Moscow and St Petersburg are the only really touristy places, but other areas off the beaten path can offer lots of fun too.

I believe that engine choice is the other huge factor for them not succeeding in the rest of the world. The Russian planes are not designed to be compatible with RR/GE/PW engines. The airlines won't order a plane with an engine with which they don't a have easy access to maintenance facilities nor which they don't have any history with. If they could fit their engines up they might be tempted to buy Russian aircraft.

Who is/are the primary engine manufacturer(s) in Russia? Where are they serviced? Which Russian/CIS airline and aircraft uses which engine?

True, the Soviet/Russian engine manufacturers lack a worldwide network of maintenance facilities, albeit the engines themselves are quite robust and in many cases are/were repaired in the open air even in their native territory. Still, with proper MX centres only in Russia, it would be a logistical nightmare to ship spares and replacement engines to locations like Australia and South America.

Nevertheless, some Russian aircraft are offered with Western engines and avionics, for example the Tu-204-120, which is powered by RR. Despite this, the aircraft still hasn't been sold to the West.
