Just spoke to my sister who was travelling on Delta Connection Flight 4526 from ATL to GNV and it had to make an emergency landing at ATL. There were no injuries. Apparently the landing gear would not retract after taking off from ATL and they had to return to make to make an emergency landing. She said everyone was calm, but a bit nervous as to be expected.
The big problem was a massive amount of people displaced because the first flight to GNV was cancelled, the flight that made the emergency landing was overbooked, leaving few options available. It looked like she was able to get on the next flight, but most were not so lucky. Does mainline Delta ever step in and help in situations like this?
Only really in places that regular see mainline flights, If available they will sometimes upgrade an aircraft, but the mainline fleet is stretched out pretty thin these days leaving little room for flexibility. Much easier for them to send them into MCO DAB or JAX and provide transportation.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!
