I went to school at Mizzou and was a reporter and anchor at a local radio station for about three years after I graduated. To me, Air Midwest operating only COU-MCI as USAirways Express always seemed a lot more logical given their already sizeable operation at MCI and the chance for more code-share connections.

But, the powers that be on the Columbia City Council pretty much insisted on having COU-STL (I'd venture to say they wanted it just out of habit... something they were used to... the logic of it be damned).

It will be interesting to see if Great Lakes would want to put in a bid if the DOT bows to what may be another city demand.

STL-COU is too close for just local traffic. The time it takes to go in and out of the airports, you could drive I-70. TWA could make it work by bringing connections through STL. COU has potential, but they need to look farther away. I'm surprised Ozark 2 didn't work in the late 90s. They tried COU-ORD and DFW.

Might work now. COU is booming.

In my seven years living in Columbia, I only flew out of COU twice because of that easy drive to STL or MCI (although MCI is about 30 miles further). But I always felt that UA could make a decent go of it putting perhaps a twice daily CRJ to ORD.... or American Eagle putting a 135 to ORD and/or DFW.

I think RJs to a hub other than AA at STL is the key.... That and a massive effort to get both the state and MU to encourage business travel out of COU.

No question about it. If you look at a 80 mile radius around COU, I'd venture to say UA or AA already serves areas less populated. If people had an alternative to driving to STL or MCI, where they were going to take a connecting flight to ORD, DEN or DFW anyway, COU would be an option. I believe they could draw from as far as Sedalia, Montgomery City, Kirksville, and the Ozarks. Plus they would pick up the o/d traffic that you won't have on short hops like STL-COU.
