The Italian airline has long-haul ambitions as well. "Yes, it will make sense for us to fly long distance. We will start long-haul flights no later than 2008," De Roni revealed. No decision has been made regarding equipment or routes, but long-haul flights likely will originate from Milan or Rome Fiumicino. "With 40 A320s on order, it is logical that we look to Airbus long-haul aircraft, but we will see."

Their start date is a bit ambitious IMO, especially if they target A330/340s, which the article seems to imply. However, an Airbus order does not seem to be a done deal, still leaving the door open for Boeing. For me it looks like an A330/350 combo in the works, especially if Airbus is able to provide A330s in time.

although AirOne are not in Star they are pretty closely linked through their relationship with LH , it may be the case that someone out there in Star Alliance could be looking at leasing them some a/c . LO start taking their 787s late next year dont they ? That could free up some 767s which are a nice size for an airline making their first tentative steps into long haul - pure speculation I readily admit , but perhaps food for thought ?

Slightly related,

Niki to, seems to explore the introduction of longhaul flights, but will likely not do so before 2009 because of the lack of availability of ideal aircraft such as the A330.

Niki is exploring the introduction of long-haul flights. "We are evaluating this constantly but there are no ideal long-haul aircraft like the A330 available on the market, so I guess not until 2009," Lauda said. "I
