Following is a list of every airline merger and takeover I remember and reading about during the 1980's:

Northwest/Republic
Piedmont/Empire
American/AirCal
USAir/PSA
Delta/Western
PeoplExpress/Frontier
Midway/Air Florida
USAir/Piedmont
Continental/PeoplExpress
Braniff/Florida Express
Alaska/Jet America
Continental/New York Air
Continental/Presidential
Southwest/Muse Air

Were there any proposed mergers that did not go through?

During the 1990's, I can only recall three mergers taking place:

Southwest/Morris Air
Pan Am/Carnival
American/Reno Air

I know that Frontier and Western Pacific had concocted a plan to merge, but Frontier backed out with WP's bankruptcy filing.
Also, both American and United attempted to buy USAir late in 1995. Neither attempt transpired.

Did I miss any? If there were any not listed, please list them for me, along with the date.
Thank you.

Why is your list only of US airlines? There is a world outside of the US you know....

What about:

Pacific Western and Canadian Pacific which = Canadian Airlines.
then Canadian and Wardair
then Air Canada and Canadian
then ther was the proposed KLM and BA merger
There are many many other smaller mergers out there, many of which I can't remember right now.

You are right. I am not excluding non US airlines because I am being nationalistic. But I am working on a project for a friend, and it is a profile of US airlines only.

Should have said so.

Here is another takeover/merger you can add to your list for the 1980's:

TWA acquired Ozark and all of its operations were merged into TWA.

This occurred on October 26, 1986....probably the only smart thing Carl Icahn ever did during his time at the helm of TWA.

Hope this helps.

And your list just refers to the Canadian mergers. Apart from KL/BA there was KL/AZ.

Of course, NW had all but signed on the dotted line in regards to a NW/ML proposed merger. We even had the flights loaded in our availability and just had to advise passengers the flight was operated by Midway Airlines!

Then the whole fiasco about the contaminated ground at Midway airport and any money NW would have made in the deal would have been less than the money it would have had to shell out for the environmental clean-up.

We did end up with ML's gates at MDW which we leased to WN, though.

There was also the proposed "Alcazar" (a four-sided Spanish fortress) merger in the mid 1990's where BA, KL, IB and SR were going to merge. However, KL and SR could not come to an agreement on which US alliance partner to choose. KL wanted NW as the foursome's US partner, and SR wanted DL.

Well, NW and KL are still together, but SR and DL have gone their own separate ways.

Continental did not pruchase or merge with Presidential.

Frontier backed out of the West Pac idea prior to West Pac's bankruptcy.

Actually, Frontier backed out of the WestPac merger after it was apparent that WestPac was virtually bankrupt. Following the merger's collapse, WestPac filed for 'real' bankruptcy.
